Oooo it's getting confusing - Rachel and Rachael!

Rachael - 15 miles is a good chunk of activity. Regularity is more important than pushing the body too hard!:D

Mellika - The first step is probably the hardest, so you've done the hard bit now. Small improvements over time will build into fitness that will probably end up amazing you at some point in the months to come.:D

Chickadee - Are you mending yet? Its odds on that you are going to come out of this virus and feel great anytime now.

My SIL has asked me if I want to do a 7K Gorilla fun run with her: http://www.greatgorillas.org/london

Looks like fun and a worthy cause, but I'm weary of tapping up everyone I know to raise the required £400 when I might need to mug everyone again for FLM 2010 (assuming I can't get a ballot place or run the 2hr 45 qualifying time ).

Maybe an offer to help her training and generous financial and moral support on the day is enough?!

P.S. Not fair becky, we want to know ukevas' secret too. * beer tins sulks*

I would be wary of trying to do too much fundraising - its tough out there at the moment - it does look fun though :D:D, but you might get a ballot place for 2010...

I'm hoping to run 3:15 in Abingdon so I dont have to raise money again - if I dont I wont do London in 2010 - I'll do a different one...but thats because I am lazy and rubbish at raising money :p

Raising money is very tough. £400 is modest in comparison to what a lot of charities seem to demand, but the effort to get that sort of money is not inconsiderable.

Anyone who has run for a while cringes every time they hear the words 'charity' or 'sponsorship'.

That is why charities target people to run for the first time because they know regular runners will give them a wide berth. But then they fill up previously good quality road races with fancy dress contestants leaving no places for club runners months ahead of the event.

At least this charity seems to have organised their own race instead of turning a previously good quality road race into a fancy dress party! The two best supported races in Leeds have gone to the wall because of the Run For Life event. Thankfully there was enough outrage from local running clubs to force the Council to act and support the reintroduction of the Leeds Half Marathon in May.

But if the trend continues there will just be London and then a load of fancy dress 10ks...nothing else!

I'd be wary of running London at all if you have to resort to a charity place, raising £1500+ will take so much of your time. You want to run a marathon not become a full time charity worker!

Hi there, I'm feeling a little bit more human today. Hurray! I've really been laid low with this virus. I was fine on Saturday and did 15 miles +. Felt OK on Sunday, albeit a bit grumpy (nothing new there then  ) but by Monday was feeling decidedly rough. Assuming I'm over the worst now, I don't know what to do about Sunday's race. I haven't run a step this week, haven't been out of the house for three days and would welcome some advice as to what to do.

I thought I would maybe try a little run in the morning and see if I feel ok and then take that as an indication as to what to do on Sunday. The thing is, it is a 20-mile race, so I can't really do it half-heartedly. However, this week has been as good a taper as any, and the race fee was £18 and I'll be really cheesed off to have paid that for nothing!

Help! Don't know what to do!

That's what I'm thinking too. No way I'll get under 2hr 45m this year, so I don't want to have to ask people for cash too often. But yeah, you never know if you'll get a ballot place of not. My colleague at work is running again this year. It seems that if you've done it before, you get preference on the ballot, or maybe she's just lucky. She didn't "gift" her entry fee.

    Do it, Chick!:D :D

You will be fitter than if you hadn't had the virus due to a)the rest and b)the boost to your system that your white blood cells will have produced.

There are numerous examples of world records being preceeded by being confined to bed in the previous week. You may not quite be able to break any records but I bet you're feeling pretty good on Sunday!:D

    It's the opposite, Beer Tins!

If you've done it before there is an anti-loyalty weighting.

In all respects, first timers are more lucrative to sponsors, charities, the race merchandise etc, etc....

£1500+? That's taking the .... Don't get me wrong, I do think charity fund-raising is very worthwhile, but this is putting huge pressure on people to use up all their friends' and colleagues' goodwill in raising cash. I understand that you have to commit to making up the difference yourself, which is a huge worry for people who don't have a few hundred kicking about for a race entry (i.e. most people). I think I'll avoid charity entries altogether and just make a donation instead!

So where is everyone who doesn't get a ballot place for FLM 2010 racing instead, then? :rotfl:

Ooooh! You don't sit on the fence with your advice do you Rich? ;) Right, assuming I'm still feeling Ok later (and I see no reason why I shouldn't) I'm going to run it. I'm not holding out for a record though!

Beer Tins - I agree with Rich on the London Ballot. I got in through the ballot the first time I tried and have entered five times since and always been rejected. I don't think gifting your entry fee makes any difference. I have heard that you are more likely to get in if you are either fast (but slower than the automatic entry time), or very slow as in the mid-pack they don't want too many runners bunching up at the finish for H&S reasons. Of course, most of the runners will be in the mid-pack range so the chances are much less.
