Hi I'm new to this thread but I'm a keen runner and up to my eyeballs in debt but sorting that out once and for all!
I've been running now for just over a year, done a few 5K's but mostly 10K's. I'm really trying to get speed now, got plenty stamina but just don't seem to push it enough. My fastest 10K was 1hr 3mins (not fast I know) and I'm so desperate to get it under an hour. I've got a 10K on Sunday so I'm hoping I'll do it then. My main goal however is finishing the Great North Run! I've been entered to run for Beating Bowel Cancer. So looking forward to it but don't know where to start. Any tips on my speed and half marathon training?Do what you want because in the end people will judge you anyway.0 -
welcome aboard rachael! My best 10k time is just over the hour too, and I want to get under 60 mins in my next one which is on Good Friday.....whether I manage it remains to be seen because my main goal is the marathon at the end of April, but I am determined to get that 10k time down at some point during the year!
Rich and becky will give you more info on training - I just plod.....:DSuccessful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. (Maud Van de Venne)Life begins at the end of your comfort zone (Neale Donald Walsch)0 -
I'm a plodder too! I know I can do it but I just seem to stay in the same comfortable pace. I'll definately do it this year.Do what you want because in the end people will judge you anyway.0

Hi Rachel,
If you want to improve the 10k time then you'll need to do 400m intervals I think...but training for the GNR will involve longer runs to get you up to the distance - which should weirdly also improve the 10k time since you're body will be able to run at higher speeds for much longer...Rich is good with explaining these things
Not running this morning now too tired so going to do a longer run tonight
- Even if I dont run today I should still break 50 miles for the week and it'll only be the second time I've down that - no wonder I'm so tired

I have slept like a log these last few nights, and I am sure it is due to the longer runs.......but I agree that it carries over into the daytime too......as you say, though, it cannot be surprising really, when you think about what is being done! Good luck for later on, if you get chance to go out.
I ache a little after last night's run, and I am intending doing my long run tomorrow instead of Sunday (I have more child-free hours tomorrow) so will probably just go for a walk this evening........or then again, I may just stay firmly on the sofa
Happy running everyone xSuccessful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. (Maud Van de Venne)Life begins at the end of your comfort zone (Neale Donald Walsch)0 -
Rich is there any advantage to running twice a day?? Im just thinking that on the days where I am down to do 10 miles could I break that down and do 2 10k's for example?? Now that the evenings are lighter I can just about squeeze that in in the evening. Or is it best to do that 10 miles in one go?I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change And breakaway. I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change and breakaway ....
