Hello all you fit people!
What a really motivating thread. I followed it last year but unfortunately didn't actually do anything to participate in it so here I am in 2009. I need to get started but I have a question:
I can't get to a running shop for a few weeks to buy proper running shoes. In the meantime I am planning to use my treadmill to get moving, otherwise I shall just use the lack of shoes as an excuse to do nothing. Would I be ok to use normal trainers for this short period?
Many thanks.
Floxxie
Hi Floxxie and welcome along.:D
Keep the exercise to walking in the meantime, its the best exercise to start out with anyway. Once you start running around 3 times your bodyweight gets transferred up your legs and through your joints with each stride, which can obviously be quite damaging to weak muscles and bones.
Walking is a lot kinder and will develop the core strength that you need for later running.
Well done, Sally. I bet that impressed the other runclub members, didn't it?Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Not sure it impressed them when I rocked up late though as the massive hill to get there took me a bit by suprise
Did manage to keep up with the fastest runner there today though so definate improvement for me!
Need to find some races and some targets to work with instead of this plodding alongI'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change And breakaway. I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change and breakaway ....

Hey Sally - the Brighton Half is in 5 weeks - could you get to that from where you are? Me and Rich are both running it and its 5000 people so will be loads of fun I reckon - plus its perfectly flat
Or I think the Bath Half is coming up soon - thats a nice one, but a bit more hilly!0 -
um brighton I could do, bit of a drive but doable I guess. Bath half is fully booked up already..and hilly!I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change And breakaway. I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change and breakaway ....

There's also a 20 miler on the same day if you'd prefer the longer distance0 -
This years runs for me are
RunMiddlesbrough Tees Pride 5k 29 March 09
Middlesbrough Tees Pride 10k 6 September 09
hopefully plenty of time to get in training, aiming to complete the 5k without walking any of it, and to do the 10k in under an hour although as long as I beat last years time of 1:07:00 I will be happy
May use the local weekly ParkRun as training throughout the yearLast Cigarette 24/6/090 -
Does anyone use the nike+ sensor and ipod reciever, are they any help with your training or are they just a gimmick?Last Cigarette 24/6/090

Some people on here use it, I'm sure - I don't think it's *just* a gimmick - it does seem to have some use...but whether it's of more or less use than other aids, like a garmin or HRM is probably debatable. At the end of the day, though, if it makes you think "I'm gonna go for a run to try out this Nike+ stuff", it's gotta be a good thing - it's just value for money is the issue. (Plus, not sure if it's still the case, but they used to be just for use with Nike shoes, which was sort of a bit of a bust - a lot of runners I know run in New Balance shoes, Mizunu (sp?) and the rest)
On the subject of shoes, Floxxie - I don't really run in what you'd call "proper running shoes", just some cheap nike trainers (well, OK, they say "running" on them, but that's it) with sorbathingies in em...never had any problems. Would have thought regular trainers will certainly be suitable for the walking phase rich was on about, anyway. This is DFW, afterall, so if your shoes do the job, there's no point in wasting money buying new ones. Better to save the money. and spend it on gadgets.
And if anyone on here's a "proper runner", it's you, Becky - so don't fear the runny shoppy people! (have to say, the people in run and become / become and run or whatever it is, were actually really nice when I went in as a complete noob, so it's not that scary)
