  • Another Saturday morning, another 5K challenge to get stuck into in about an hours time!:D :D

Conditions look a bit better than last week, when the Leeds event was actually cancelled, a rare event for Parkrun.

Just to confirm how mad we were last week this is the race summary for the Wimbledon event that we somehow managed last Saturday:

    They who dare win.

There was much debate as to whether the event should go ahead. The first corner of the course was like a skid patch, the straight up to Parkside was dappled with ice and the 100m stretch leading up to Kingsmere would not have looked out of place on Dancing on Ice. But valour got the better part of discretion and, after a briefing on the course conditions, the health and safety police were sent packing and the 74 mad men and women who turned up ready to run agreed they would all compete for PWs – walking if necessary over the more challenging parts of the course

Fortune favoured the brave so thankfully we counted 74 out and 74 in and judging by some of the smiles on the faces of the runners they actually enjoyed it. Just look at Lindsay Cunningham on her way round. In event director Ian’s absence there was some judicious corner cutting to avoid the more treacherous parts of the course. This was counter balanced by the massive detour that most runners took over the swamp approaching Kingsmere

Despite the conditions, amazingly there were 5 PBs. These guys were really living on the edge. Sixth placed Tim Slater continued his record of achieving a new PB on every run, improving by another 24 secs. Peter Gilbert, Simon Occleshaw and Dan Rustein beat their previous bests by 83 secs, 38 secs and 19 secs respectively. Dare devil Kirsty Learmonth lowered her PB by 42 secs.

So hoping for something a little more straightforward today!:D:D

Happy weekend running everyone - these marathon build ups are really picking up pace now!:D

Good luck for your runs today guys!

I am off on the Heathrow dash today - picking up DS from his latest ski [STRIKE]jolly[/STRIKE] training, so no running for me - but I do have my 20k tomorrow morning so that's all fine.

Have a good one, and fingers crossed that the weather stays favourable!

Oh boy, that felt good! :j :j

After 56.5 miles in the last 4 days there was always a chance that heavy leg syndrome would take over. Sure enough, this morning they were feeling pretty heavy, but with a 5K (especially a hilly one) still being mainly a stength event the benefit from higher mileage was clearly felt.

So 6:19/mile on a hilly 5K is well on target at this stage and 14th in a race which was rather hot today (won by an international triathlete!) has made me rather chuffed! :D:D:D

The series of 5ks so far has gone:

    22/11 23:21 (7:30/mile) (posn 45th) Leeds
    29/11 22:47 (7:19/mile) (posn 50th) Leeds
    6/12 22:08 (7:06/mile) (posn 25th) Leeds
    20/12 21:44 (6:58/mile) (posn 15th) Leeds
    27/12 21:09 (6:46/mile) (posn 9th) Leeds
    10/1 20:05 (6:29/mile) (posn 17th) Leeds
    24/1 20:17 (6:33/mile) (posn 18th) Leeds
    7/2 20:27 (6:36/mile) (posn 10th) Wimbledon
    14/2 19:36 (6:19/mile) (posn 14th) Leeds

And guess what I'm going to have as a reward? Yep, muesli and custard!:p :p:p :j :j

Well done Rich - broken the magic 20 minute barrier by a fantastic margin :D

So go on what was the winning guys time??

I was feeling a bit annoyed about missing this morning's race, but just tried on my ballgown for tonight and instantly feel soo much better - why is the world always great when you're wearing a fabulous dress :D
  • Thanks - it does feel like the barrier needed smashing rather than sneaking through, so well happy!:D :D

No idea about the winner's time, although it was FAST! Have to wait for the results later.

And I've no idea why that should be - I can't say that I've ever worn a ballgown to experience the effect - maybe I should get a panto role as one of the ugly sisters and then the world will be great!:p :p:p

Howdy all not really ran much this week so far bar home from work every day. Since last sundays 15.5 miler all i've done is one 4 mile run on tuesday. Will be out later on today for a 4-5 miler nice and easy. 5 days of running home from work (1.5 miles around 11:15 at night) keep the legs ticking over. Normally walk to work one way as its daylight and safe on the back road covering a mile and run or walk home via the main road as there is pavement all the way which i 1.5 miles that way so i'm covering 12.5 miles a week just going to and from work. Walking being a good loosener too espcially when you are a fast walker like me.

Now tomorrow there is a local 34k race which being its £5 i'll be doing even though it goes over two of the road passes in the lake district. Mapmyrun.com claim 1600 foot of climbing so i'll be interested to see what my watch measures being it work out the elevation via NASA sat images i think it is for the terrain mapping add on sporttracks has.

Next sunday is my first real test as its another local race this time a ten miler where i fully expect to PB just not sure how much by. 2-3 mins worth at least i would say. Potential to bust through the sub 80 mark as well as the sub 85 which will be beaten.

£5 is more like a reasonable entry fee than some of these races expect you to pay!:D
