Rules for ending three contract?

Rang three to cancel present contract which runs out on 24th feb at 12 midnight, I said I'd like to port my number too. I thought they needed at least 30 days warning to cancel contracts thats why I rang then.

They offered me some rubbish deals that I can get better elsewhere, I'm still looking.

They told me my contract wont be put down for canceling yet and said to go and look around for deals then ring back if I still want to cancel or to get an upgrade and I have 30 days to do it. But I'm now concerned that when I ring back to cancel they will say they needed 30 days advanced warning so might not let me cancel the contract on the right date 24th feb. Should I ring back to say I'm definitely cancelling again just in case? coz I'm sure I'll get a better deal, thinking of trying one of the 12 month free rental ones
Thanx

I think you're right about the 30 days - ring them back now

I asked to switch to payg, ignored a few offers, said the coverage round here was marginal and that was part of my reason

I just called to confirm, and my switch occurs 30 days after I discussed it - (I'll be on their new WePay system which seems to apply to all new payg)

I would ring them again and tell them you want to cancel.

Then after that call, ringthem back to make sure it has been done.

Log their name and extension number if you feel they are just fobbing you off.

  • hi lady_K...if you've made up your mind about getting a contract from somebody else other than from 3 directly, then yes cancel 30days before the 24th Feb....cos giving 30days' advanced notice is a must, and doing it any later than 30days before the 24th of Feb just means that you are delaying the last day of your contract.

after cancelling, you should receive a letter from 3 saying "sorry to hear that you're leaving the network....your last day of the contract will be XX/XX/2006" blah blah blah

check that the date on the letter is correct and more importantly make sure you RECEIVE it....cos its the only proof you've got of cancellation; anything else is just a matter of your word against theirs. also 3 may actually cancel your line later than what's supposed to be, then in that case you'll have the letter to back up your case and avoid any repercussions too (it happened to me, so i'm speaking from 1st hand experience)

hope this helps...and all the best=)

What if they take it into another month because of the one or two days later now than the 30 day advanced warning would they charge me a whole months rental?

and was yours with three skiptomylou?

I havent found any deals yet to go to but I will do anyway but I just didnt want to leave this too late and I'm sure if I changed my mind anyway they would let me stay on but not the other way around
    Thanx

They won't add another month - it will just be a couple of days pro rata.

If you want to keep the number, it takes about a week for the porting to go through after you give the PAC number to the new network. You can ask for the number now, and use it within 30 days of issue.

If you want to transfer your number, you need to request a PAC code now - if you wait for 30 days then request it, the PAC request effectively starts the 30 day notice period again (and cancels your cancellation request, if you see what I mean). A PAC code is effectively giving 30 days notice - so long as you use it. If not, after 30 days, your contract continues and you are still paying.

If your cancellation period falls over into a new billing month, then I believe you may pay part month (proportion of the contract - would be paying normally in advance and perhaps get a refund - I know Orange work that way from experience). Note that if you do decide to port your number, and give the PAC code to another network - it takes 7 days approx to go through - if you do that on day 1 of your billing cycle, then for the other 23 days you may be paying for a contract/minutes/texts that you cannot use as they will end the moment your number transfers.

As a result, get a PAC, you have 30 days to decide where you are transferring to (up to and including day 30), therefore on day 22/23, port the number out (perhaps to a PAYG - there are plenty of free ones always coming up on o2 etc) and you will not have lost out on a contract you have paid for. If it goes through before the end of your contract terms (ie you have 12 month contract and you give your PAC to another network on month 10) then you would be presented with a bill for any remaining monthly fees to take you up to the end of your 12 month contract.

    Straight forward really ;)

Sorry I'm trying to understand this but it's not going in that well:

However I have rang 3g and what a nightmare! I just don't understabnd what they are saying and they just don't understand what the hell they are doing half the time it seems. It was the indian call center and they asked why didnt get the pack code before if I'd rang to cancel like I'd said so I told him that apparently there were tecnical difficulties when I rang so I was ringing back now to make sure it had actually been done and I was not interested in any deals but he still tried to persuade me and didnt want to listen. I asked him if they were going to end the contract at midnight on 24th feb and he just said they couldn't do that and I had to ring back at a later date to get my pac code and decide if I wanted a deal, it was like talking to a machine and I still don't understand whats happening.

2 mins after the call ended he rang back saying "This is 3g and our customers always get what they want, you requested your pack code so I am here to give it to you" then he preceded with the apha golf stuff and gave me the pac... I still don't know whats happening, when my contract will end or what or if its gone through to end on 24th feb or what! He just said its valid till 24th feb... if a pac is supposed to last 30 days why is it valid till 24th feb when I got it today?
    Thanx

Does sound like a bad setup they have there.

Least you have your PAC now, I'm sure when you give your PAC to a different network that gives the new network permission to take you on as a customer and to cancel the old contract. So if you give a company your PAC tomorrow and they accept it ok, then your old contract will end tomorrow.

Someone correct me if i'm wrong but i'm pretty sure thats how it works.

What exactly is the best thing to do now and when? I wanted a new contract with another company to start on 24th or 25th feb as the other with 3g should end on 24th.

I wouldnt want to get cut off from 3g till at least the end of the 12 months because I'll lose the minutes and texts I've paid for so by giving my pac code to someone tomorrow would cut 3g off wouldnt it beforetime? and I'd waste almost a months worth

And what if I didnt find a new contract before 24th will 3g end anyway?
    Thanx
