Lloyds just get worse with the hard sell

    Last week, I heard a customer at the counter being asked how many loans he had. He replied he had 2 both of which matured this year. He was asked if he would like another one. Apart from the hard sell problem, these sort of personal questions shouldn't be asked at the counter for everyone else in the queue to overhear.

    Many thanks for correcting me. I was only working on the basis that I know how HBOS do it, and that is to have allow the customer to choose yes/no to each of: at counter marketing (if it's no, then the cashier will have a big message on their screen as soon as the card is swiped and so is not allowed to say anything marketing-related to the customer), telephone, letter, and maybe more.

    More than likely though she wasn't. It's got nothing to do with ageism. Just common sense.

    Anyway, £12 per month for travel insurance, mobile insurance and breakdown cover is a rip off. She should be shopping around.

    Last time Lloyds tried to sell me something, I wrote down the url for moneysavingexpert and passed it to the cashier. She was impressed with my 0% credit card shuffles and that you can get 1/2 price Sky just by asking.

    but really she could have benefited, you don't know her personal situation and neither does the cashier or OP, so no one has a right to pass judgement as to wether this account would or would not be suitable and educating her like any other customer to the benefits of the account isn't really forcing her to buy it. Many banks will also give you better savings rates so if for example they give an extra 1% and she has £250k in the bank then she would get an extra £208 a month interest which far outweighs the £12. I know this an extreme example but just to show that nobody knows this ladies situation.

    The bank isn't interested in "educating" their customers. Only selling to them. They are trying to push their products onto customers to increase profit margins. Whether on not the customer gets a good deal is irrelevant to them - and more often than not, the products they are pushing are grossly overpriced.

    I don't understand why you say travel insurance (for the account holder AND partner), mobile phone insurance and breakdown cover as well £100 INTEREST free overdraft and other benefits added like airmiles travel service costing £12 per month (£140 a year) would be a RIP OFF?? I am platinum account holder and are paying £17 a month (£200 a year), however i get £250 interest free overdraft (which is perfect for my needs in case of emergency) and all the above benefits including mobile phone insurance, travel insurance (plus family cover) travelling as much as I like to cover my family up to 45 days per trip. I found having a seperate travel insurance to cover my family of 4 would be in the region of £180-£250 plus. If anyone can tell me i am worse off then please enlighten me!!

    ok I went over this already in another thread. Although the bank is a business so is trying to make money it also tries to do this by helping customers, For example if you have £40k in your current account they may suggest a savings account.

    If I leave these as my response your reply would be that there is a better savings account at bank x down the street.

    to which I will respond if the bank didn't suggest you put in savings account anyway then you wouldn't have got any interest but at least you will get some but maybe not best interest on the market.

    Overpriced for you but not for everyone. For example I use Mobile phone insurance - saving me and partner £14 per month and World wide travel insurance saving me £70 per year for me and partner - roughly £6 per month so spend £12.95 per month - Save £20 = Total saving of £7 per month. Also many other benefits I don't use Green Flag cover - reduced mortgage rates - increased savings rates - discounts on hotels etc

    So although overpriced for you it would be beneficial to others!

    My final point would be re your comment about regardless of whether its better or not for the customer? Would you agree to something that would make you worst off?? No, thought not!

    Spot on! It all depends on the customer's needs. For a pensioner who never go aboard and don't have a mobile phone, nor drive a car would be stupid to have one of the Added Value Accounts!!
    For me, I am very happy and satisfied customer as I actually save money! It does not suit everyone who got one of those AVAs. I have done my homework and it is good value for money if you often need or take up with the benefits on offer.

    I'm glad my money is with Nationwide - they never contact me about anything. And that's the way I like it.

    If I want a savings account, or insurance, I'll approach them. In my own time. I will not be badgered.
    I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂
