  • the Asda own brand notebook optical mouse is good value at just under £5.
  • might be going down to Asda in the next few days to look for one of these. Can anyone tell me what I should be asking for/looking for to get the bigger memory model.

Also would this work with msn messenger?
    I hate migraines.

The above picture is taken fom the side of the AA1's box; ignore the red circle, what you are interested in is the BIOS version
    3301 or 3304 = 160gb drive
    3114 or 3305 = 120gb drive

Thanks go to all the people who contributed this information; i'm simply copy/pasting ;-)

    Hi TJJ.
Thanks for the thanks, as it was me that stated the original BIOS no's and HDD sizes. I'm afraid you have made a small mistake though :o as it should read from my original post:

    3114/3305 = 120GB
    3301/04 = 160GB

Easily done with all them 3's. :p But please could you amend that on yours so peeps don't get confused.
Thanks for all your help on here too hun  I just love my lil' lappy!

    xx

I was going to buy a secondhand laptop off ebay until I saw this thread.

I just want something for basic surfing really ie reading these forums!

I can't sit at the pc for long and my husband is also unable to so I thought a laptop would be ideal.

I know these are a lot smaller than a laptop but I assume it would be ideal for what we want it for ie to use whilst sitting in an armchair because of their size.

Would it be worth me going for one of these instead, does everyone who has bought one highly recommend them?

They are a fantastic machine. I've bought one which i've upgraded to 1.5GB and installed XP on, my OH is perfectly happy with Linux (pre installed), and uses it for surfing (infront of the TV), takingout with her etc....

The only issues might be worth mentioning are 2(ish)hr batt life, touchpad with buttons at the side (takes some getting use to), and the major problems you're going to have - is being able to get hold of one of these .... If you find one, I would grab it .... it might not be around for long at this price ....

Well, I haven't told my husband yet but I have just found a local store that has some left.

I asked her to read the code on the side and it was 3301 so I assume this is the 160gb one.

They only have blue ones left, do the blue ones look ok folks or do they scratch easily?

Also, we have a router so we can go online using our ancient (300mhz) lappy using a dongle, do I assume I don't need anything extral to go online with this. We are with Tiscali broadband so will the notebook automatically find it when I switch it on?

I'm sat on my couch with my AA1 typing this reply, so yeah should be good for an armchair too :D
It's a great product; and out-of-the-box is suitable for most casual tasks; web browsing, emailing, reading & writing documents, etc.

If you move beyond the 'casual' tasks, you might find the Linux distro. it's packaged with to be too restrictive. There are several paths you can take to address this, each requiring differing degrees of technical know-how to accomplish.
There is however a huge number of very supportive AA1 users, and consequently there are guides available for almost every hardware & software mod imaginable. (installing Ubuntu/Windows/OSX, upgrading memory/harddrive/wireless/webcam/battery, adding touch screen/bluetooth, etc etc)

Super-charging netbooks is a very appealing pass-time for some people :rotfl:
