Hi,
I'm going to house sit for a few days where they only have dial-up, can anyone recommend an external modem that will work with this netbook? I've looked at Acer aspire one forum but the discussion on this subject is too technical for me. All I want to do is plug the modem in and (assume) get it's linux driver/software from the internet.
Thanks for any replies.0 -
Picked up one of these, absolutely love it - Linux virgin but learning quickly, and so far not needing or wanting the delights of the more familiar XP! I don't know how I ever managed lugging my big old beast of a Dell about! For some good and easy walkthroughs regarding a few updates and installing VLC etc. have a peek here...

The O2 payg modem at £29.35 from O2 online works well with the Huawei driver available on the Acer support website. It is also unlocked so will work with any sim given the correct apn settings etc

This gives mobile access through 3G/gprs plus the ability to log onto the Cloud networks.
Personally, I'm about to upgrade the ram and install a replacement wifi card (dell 1490) as I have the machine dual booting in Windows 7 (beta) and in Leopard.
Anyone installing Windows 7 on this netbook will probably require a wifi driver for the existing card

Just follow the instructions.0 -

One last question before I go get it tomorrow! lol
I'm on Virgin broadband with my laptop, and I have installed a USB dongle and wireless router thingy (well, my best mate did it for me...). I access the internet by typing in my encryption password.
Can anyone confirm this netbook will work the same way? With Virgin?
Many thanks!
maybe ring before you go as all my stores run out!0 -
Install VLC player and it will play Divx / xvids perfectly
Which command did you type in to install VLC the problem seems to be the repo has moved tried the new repo too but still VLC fails to install with dependancy errors.
Yum is working as I can install packages like gEdit
Any help on getting VLC working on the Acer One welcome!
It is a really great machine, the screen and the keyboard are better than some of the more expensive latops.
Tried hibernate on lid close but that was slow, the 15second cold boot is excellent!Seth.0 -

According to this post: https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/42980
You need to install these packages.
python-qt3 hpoj hpoj-xojpanel hplip hpijs hplip-gui
So- Turn on the machine
- When the Acer menu appears, wait until a network connection is made (e.g. wifi or mobile)
- Press ALT+F2 (Hold ALT down then press F2
- In the pop up enter SH, and click the check box for terminal, press OK
- A white terminal window will appear, enter
sudo yum install python-qt3 hpoj hpoj-xojpanel hplip hpijs hplip-gui
This will print messages as it finds the packages to be installed, if it asks if it is ok to install along the way just enter Y and press return. Hopefully the packages list should install. The last few messages printed will let you know if it worked. - Try connecting the printer and see if it is recognised, connects and prints a test page.
PM me if you need more help, if we get this sorted we can post the solution here.

I'm giving up trying to find one I think. I've emailed Asda central CS to find out if there's a way to find out where stock is.
I've been looking for a week (and phoning) and just not getting anywhere.
Anyone find any stock in Milton Keynes area, LMK!
So far, stores visited include Farnborough, Slough, Hemel, MK, Warrington (both) and Hatfield.0
