    Hi Max,
just had a look at this and to be honest it doesnt look much better than the one you get free with it.

Also as this is a American website Im sure you wont get free delivery and if you do it will probably take weeks to arrive!

If you are on about Deal Extreme, their delivery is free. You can pay for quicker delivery but I'd stick with the free delivery option. And delivery times are about 3-4 weeks........... not bad as their stuff comes from Hong Kong!

Ok have held off on questions as had really set my heart on the Samsung netbook but keep thinking about the price of this!!

My main question is how would I connect to the internet?

At home I have a router and old laptop has a card that links to the internet (am not technical me!) If I was out say on a train I was planning on buying a PAYG dongle but would this work with this netbook?

Ive just got a Sony Erricson C905 phone - can those be used for net access linked to a netbook?

I dont drive so dont know if the more local Asdas have this offer and means a long bus ride after work if I did want to look at these.

Hmmmmm really want that Samung but the Moneysaver side of my head cant ignore this deal:rotfl:

Thanks in advance for answers to my questions!

Various free applications are available for the Acer One (inc. GIMP - photo editing) from the website, as well as latest drivers, BIOS etc.

Hi Alisont! As I said before, I'm no expert...but you don't seem to be one either, so to be honest, I think you'll be fine with the ACER! Compared to my laptop (4 year old Toshiba), it's got 4 times the harddrive capacity. If what you want a netbok for is using it on the move, for relatively unimportant things, then it'll be just fine. There is no need to pay over the top for specs you won't be using anyway.
My mate has an "internet" phone too, and he said I'd be grand with this as it's got a much more manageable screen for typing, and can be used as a "spare" hardrive is needs be (my laptop is on 40GB). He also said it was similar in price to 120GB mp3 players, but with many more capabilities. I'd say go for it! I certainly will. :O)

For summary details/features of the AA1 I would suggest looking at the acer website, www.acer.co.uk

    - It will connect to your home wireless router without issue, using Wifi b/g
    - Mobile BB could be an issue, either via a dongle or via your phone (as you will need drivers, the problem here is that not many devices have Linux drivers written from them), the only ones i've found are for the Huwaui range of devices, the 220 seams to be a safe bet....
    - The unit is nice a small, very portable and a great deal at £150 !!

The Linux backup software is on a DVD, so you'll need a remote drive if you are wanting to fix it back to shop bought state.

Paul has summed it up pretty well - although you don't need an external CD/DVD drive. If you have access to another PC and a USB memory stick (2GB min) you can create your own boot USB drive and re-install using that method ....

I read somewhere that the offer is an Acer promotion from 12 to 20 Jan. The Staff in Asda said it was for 1 week only - not sure if this is the same week as Acer announced! So if your after one of these you will need to act fast...Farnborough (Hants) has 4 or 5 remaining in stock. Also, be aware some of the staff are unaware of the offer, as they where not on general display (kept out back!).

If you're after one I suggest it's best to ring round the stores. I went to the basildon one early saturday morning, they had a massive sign at the door advertising them, had a look around, then ended up waiting 45mins at the entertainment desk to be told they had sold out
  • I have been inspired to make my first post due to this fantastic Asda Acer bargain! Managed to grab mine this morning, possibly the last one in stock in Bristol.

I was finding Linux very restricting and wasn't able to install any new applications. However, thanks to a previous posting I stumbled across this:

    http://www.aspireoneuser.com/2008/07/09/aspire-one-advance-linpus-mode-hack/

Now there are so many more options available and I can download and install easily.

Maybe others will find it useful too.

Oh, I'm getting paranoid now...:o that the guy I spoke to didn't really reserve it for me....Argh!

But then if there are some there, and the rest of the UK has run out, I would be happy to get one in my store in Northern Ireland and send it for postage cost. Should the need arise!
