  • i doubt that very much

she was on the sick, he was a "trained mechanic", what would going to work lose him, his JSA?

he could take home £350 a week for the loss of some working tax credit so i get the impression he was a bit of a slacker
Was only repeating what i just listened too, litraly, thats all
Thats it, i am done, Blind-as-a-Bat has left the forum, for good this time, there is no way I can recover this account, as the password was random, and not recorded, and the email used no longer exits, nor can be recovered to recover the account, goodbye all …………. :(
  • I wasn't going to watch the programme prior to my BR for fear of it being too upsetting but I did in the end. I did not get upset but did find myself wanting to shout at the telly re the sick guys tax bill and a few other things. My husband thinks it was funded by the IS lol. As a lot of you have already said it did not explain things properly or give out any of the charities numbers grrrr. However it could have been worse and showed bankruptcy being 'too easy' - that would have frustrated me more.

It made me realise i'm lucky to have access to this site and the CCCS helpline and know my rights xxx

  • ps I agree the husband of the family that had their house repossessed is lazy and using the benefits as an excuse. However I did feel sorry for them having to go through the stress of selling their home if they were going BR anyway - I wish the programme had explained they did not have to sell their home if going br anyway. I hope they have a home sorted now as they looked to be in a hostel at the end of the programme - that must be awful :-(

There was a massive push to get everyone computer literate with free courses offered. If she chose not to participate what do you expect people to do.
This comment is fairly harsh. The woman had a management position at work and was looking after 3 young boys with what appeared to be a not very useful husband. Some people's priorities are different and if you don't know anything about the net in the first place how are you meant to know what good advice is on there?
My heart was breaking for this woman and her kids. Yet another sad family who have bought into Maggie Thatcher's ideal of owning your home being all important only to have it shattered in front of your eyes.

  • Its just such a shame they had never fallen behind on rent payments so they must have thought a mortgage was the right way to go especially considering they said it was less than the rent. I agree it should have been made clear that the fact that they secured their loan against the house was a major factor. I think that programme will have scaremongered many people into burying their heads in the sand for longer.
Money, money, money. Must be funny, in a rich man's world.
  • Missed the beginning of the programme but was upset by the whole thing, it didn't appear to show the whole picture. This issue of debt and br should surely be a series of programmes not one hour, how on earth the programme makers thought they could capture the 24hour stress, despair and hopelessness that goes with trying to repay crippling debts when your circumstances have changed dramatically in one hour I don't know.

That poor woman and her three children had me in tears, her oh was a total g*t but she was plainly struggling to cope with everything and I could so very much emphathise with her and I only hope that she and her children have managed to find a home. My oh is workshy, just like hers, and he watched the programme with me and the only good thing I can say about the programme is he recognised that he was very similar to total g*t and cried and said he hadn't been much use to me in all this terrible mess. Sorry to say his tears are a little late for me, he's put me through way too much.

Somebody should make a series of programmes showing the struggle many people go through, for myself it took me 8 months before I finally conceded that br was the only responsible thing I could do as my family and myself were suffering too much. This was after over two years of trying desperately to pay everybody.

They should also show the resources available, that there is help and support out there in the form of this wonderful site and that after that day in court things are not suddenly rosy. Yes I am a lot happier now that I've "done the deed" but I really wish there had been another option. Life is not suddenly easy, it's still a struggle, just that the debt is no longer a worry.

They missed a golden opportunity to do some real good.
Life may not be the party we hoped for

He would have also lost the interest being paid on their mortgage maybe (equ to Housing benefit), the JSA with 5 kids is prob alot, kids school meals???, carers allowance etc etc

and by her being on sickness would have upped the ante I'm sure

but I do agree he wasn't motivated at all and he was either really stress, proud and/or embarassed being film in such a situation or he was just not a nic man/husband
