    Hello All

In the spirit of OS - OH has suggested we have a valentines celebration at home this year. Can anyone help with ideas for a low cost meal, treats, romantic cards etc.

I want to make this really special - but cant just go out and splash the cash around.

    Thanks in advance

    Trin

If you can spare a tenner, Lidl are doing an electric waffle maker on Monday that makes heart shaped waffles. Just for something different.

Hi Trinny, I did this last year. I had a budget of £10 for a three course meal. I can remember the whole thing came to about £9.96 (because my sister came with me and was really impressed). These are the things I got ..

Starter - prawn cocktail - already had salad cream at home to make the sauce so just got some really nice prawns.

Main - mussels in garlic sauce (there were doing 2 packs in the supermarket for £4) with pasta.

Pudding - lovely fruit salad and cream (a small tub cost around 40p).

Hope this gives you some ideas. Have a fab evening. x

My boyfriend and I do this every year. We normally take it in turn to cook for each other, but this year we are splitting up the courses. He's doing the main, I'm doing the starter and pudding.

I've decided on a ham and tomato tart for starters, using ready rolled puff pasty (reduced to clear). I'll cut out rectangles and then put sliced ham and halved cherry toms on and bake until the pastry is ready. For pudding I'm trying to decide whether to make crumble (I guess it's my signature dish) or do a white swiss roll trifle (http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/database/whitechocolateraspbe_73891.shtml)

We don't buy each other presents, as we never have the money, but we do make each other cards, but only using the crafting things I have lying around. The Thrifty Gifty girls on the Special Occasions board have a challenge running for a frugal Valentines, so you may get some ideas there (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=28906925#post28906925)

Not particularly OS (although it still has to be cooked) but M&S are going to do their Dine In meal, but this time a special 2 for £20 with starter, main, side, pudding, a decent bottle of fizz and single rose for £20.

Fairly naff bars/restaurants near me are charging £20+ a head for VD, by the time you add wine and service charge it would be well over £50 to get equivalent quality.

Usual disclaimer: I'm an M&S customer assistant, but don't have any vested interest in whether they sell anything or not.
  • Tesco had some little heart shaped fry pans in their valentines display when I was one of Gloucester's stores yesterday. They were very cheap if I remember. they were about fried egg size but could be used for pancakes.

I've just bought the Tesco Finest meal for £9 which I thought was good value. It was chicken fillets in bacon with balsamic and onions, veg side dish, two delicious chocolate puddings and a nice bottle of wine. I also bought a little frying pan that will make a fried egg in a heart shape and I'll do that at breakfast.
