Are they any vegetables that can be grown in shade, one half of my garden (the side that has the most space) is under trees so gets little sun, there are also lots of roots there but will have to work around those, not wanting to plant anything too fancy, already do tomatoes and beans, and looking to do maybe potatoes and carrots and some salad items, but any info appreciated..

longer-lived herbs such as mint, parsley & chervil will do well in shadier spots, as do most crops which grow lush leaves so lettuces & salads will do well. Climbing french beans, runner beans, rhubarb and beetroot usually don't mind!

Iused to have a small veg patch which was shaded from around 12noon each day but all the above grew well - have fun!

Thanks everyone, have been making lots of lists! Now planning some raised beds, or rather nagging my OH, just need to decide on composts and fertilisers now and order my seeds! :j

    Afternoon!

Half of my back garden gets sunshine in high summer but the rest, and my front garden, gets no direct sunshine at all all year.

Does anyone know of veg that I can grow in these conditions? The ground is generally damp

    Thank you for your help

Go for some "new" potatoes - they are ready in 12 weeks so you can catch the sunny spell in your garden!

Grow other quick growing things like early peas and salad leaves and time them for the sunniest part of the summer
Have you got a fence that gets more sun at the top? if so attach some wall baskets and grow some stuff in them like strawberries

Also as I'm alwasy going on about - grow fruit like Blackberries, Raspberries and redcurrants - they will all tolerate some shade and good value for money as they're always dear in the shops

I grow spuds, runner beans, broad beans, carrots and parsnips in the shade every year. In my experience even tomatoes and peppers will grow but not crop as heavily and take a long time to ripen.

Are these grown in full shade or do they get a bit 'o' sun each day?

Did you use one of those box kits? I haven't heard any good reports about them.

I think it would take a bit of effort/research to find out which varieties were suitable to the area you had in mind... live tree or dead wood, type of tree or wood, light or shade etc. also, having had a quick look, it can take a long time (up to 2 years) for some mushrooms to start growing after plugging, so you need to be committed and patient, but once you've got them growing, you've got them for years.

I posted the mushroom question on another website and got the info that the best place to grow them would be in somewhere like the hot water cupboard, dark and warm, but that little black fly or bug like things are common and I thought "Is it worth it?" and the answer came back "No!"

I have the same problem, the area with most space for veg has tall bay trees on the south side - cutting them back is not an option according to the landlord. No lawn cos bays have a shallow root system and it's overshadowed. So, I'm thinking raised beds in tyres with some weed blanket underneath. Would I be ok with beans on teepee frames, lettuce, chard etc in tyres? Would tires be deep enough for beetroot / celeriac? And I've seen somewhere that strawberries don't need a lot of sun, or am I being overly optimistic
