I have a small border where I want to try and grow some veg... it only gets a short amount of sun in the mornings 3 hrs or so.. and is shaded by trees the rest of the day, are there any veg that will do ok in such an environment? I did dig out one small tree but the others are just too big ...

I'd also be interested in this too. I have a flower bed that is shaded and I would like to grow some herbs in mine as well. Can anyone make any recommendations? I thought it might be a cheap way to fill up the bed and to get something I can use in the kitchen as well.

You can also grow alpine strawberries in partial shade. I've only seen these available as seeds, not plants, and they need warmth to germinate (eg. a heated propagator). I'm trying them for the first time, for a shady area of the garden where I don't think I'd have luck with much else.

    Hi

I bought some well rooted Alpine strawberry plants(from ebay) and have planted 4 of them in a very shady area of my raised bed and the rest of them went in pots that have been sitting in my mini greenhouse ever since. All have taken and although the potted plants are slightly ahead (They are just about to flower) the raised bed plants are thriving , just growing slightly slower. HTH

    good luck with ur growing.!
  • Hi there - re something to grow up a fence - have you thought about a hop?

These can get cut back to ground level every year and are very attractive, fast growing climbers. Hop garlands are nice to have indoors and have a pleasant scent too - http://www.hopfields.co.uk/

That reminded me that my Dad used to grow rhubarb in a shady bed in our garden when I was growing up. It was right next to the house and I don't think it got any sun except for early morning. It did very well and was delish..... My mum made all sorts of puddings and also rhubarb and ginger jam... yum
