Mondeo TDCi Dual Flywheel nonsense

What kind of percentage? 1%, 10%, 50%? Looking at a mondeo TD myself - is it only one particular year, or all years?
Andy
All Mondeos with the TDdi and TDCi engine suffer DMF failure. We do some that have only done 40,000. Mine lasted to 134,000. While the gearbox was out I decided to put a new clutch in. Also with the Ford setr up, when the DMF starts breaking up, it normally takes the starter motor with it.0 -

Saabs/Vauxhall 1.9TiD/CDTi: Out of 20 we do about 70%
Honda 2.2diesel: About 20%.
VAG 1.9/2.0TDi: 10%
They fail due to a combination of crap build quality and driver abuse. Now every one at this point normally says "well I'm a good driver". But how many people do you see at thraffic lights holding the car on the clutch? Have a look next time youre sat at a red light.
I'd say about 90% of people hold the car on the clutch .
This is so true Harvey. I think what has happened is that people have been used to driving smooth petrol engine cars where there is minimal vibration being transferred through the constant clutch/declutching. Then they switch to a diesel where even on the smoothest diesel there is a lot of mechanical vibration being transferred on the constant use of the clutch.
A lot of people do hold the car on the clutch and if not they constantly nibble forward in traffic. The man without a signature.0 -

Most cars recommend that you mate the new DMF to a new clutch as the combination as it is decent value to do it at the time as you say but also new strain can be put on a DMF by a new clutch.0 -

The gearbox places we use charge £150-200 for labour for doing clutch and flywheels. We supply the parts.
I wish I lived near you!
My local (Surrey) Ford dealer quoted £921 for clutch/master cylinder all in while Mr Clutch were charging £450. (Ford dropped to £650 when I told him about Mr Clutch's price...warms the cockles doesn't it?) Please tell me if anyone knows of any decent dealers in this area.
Your percentage failure rate is unbelievable! How can the manufacturers carry on with this rubbish - I work in IT and any software house writing code like that would have had a fix out years ago.0 -

Harvey is a dealer so gets access to trade rates on parts and labour.
If it were IT in a Government Department they would put up with it, spend millions in an attempt to fix it, go bust fixing it, call in another IT firm to fix it for more millions etc etc.The man without a signature.0 -
Bro in law got a gearbox changed in his corsa van by a local mechanic that works from home. Old one out, replacement one in for £120.
And no, he's not some shady operator just because he works from home. He has access to everything any independent garage would have access to.
So if the gearbox is out, I'd think throwing in a clutch and DMF wouldnt be too much more. A quick browse on ebay reports £400 (approx) for starter, DMF, Clutch kit and concentric slave cylinder. Thats without trying a leg and not being "in the trade".0 -

Yes I did that on my sosns Ka recently - gearbox from breakerayrd and my local reliable mechanic stuck it in cheap.
To be honest I am sick and tired of the DMF and Mr Clutch is replacing it with a retrofit flywheel as well as the clutch for £700.0 -

You are soooo right, but then the government are absolutely useless at spending our money...but that's another story.0 -

Is it only the Mondeo sized diesals that have this problem? Would a petrol engine suffer a similar fate? Would say a TD focus also suffer from a DMF made from the worlds finest Disintagratelum?

Weve never done any DMF's on the Focus, but we dont have many Focus's on sale. But they too fail, but not as often for some reason.
The price quoteed for the DMF and clutch were genuine Ford ones.0
