I 2.0 TDCI Mondeo (55 plate, 130BHP, 6 speed, 32k miles, ghia-x, all leather, heated seats, cruise control, air con, 6 cd multiplayer)

This is the exact spec I am looking for, although as mentioned above I have found an automatic that I like the look of. Does the auto box have any particular problems I need to look out for?

Just the standard checks on the autobox:

Make sure there's no warning lights showing.

Make sure it goes through all the gears on the test drive.

Press the Sport button on cars equipped and the box should lock out 4th (or the highest gear) and be in 3rd.

Shifts should be soft without any massive flaring of the rev counter.

Move the box from D to N to R quickly (or vice versa) and there shouldn't be much more than a small push. Some cars jerk quite hard when doing this.

On some cars the autobox shares fluid with the power steering reservoir so check the state and colour of the fluid. Should look like Ribena.

If you buy a used automatic I would take the car to a member of https://www.fedauto.co.uk and have the gearbox fluid changed. It cost me £80.

They are decent enough cars, big and cheap.

We just need conor to come on and rave about how they will outhandle a Ferrari and outdrag a Veyron now! :D

    "Unstoppable" is me - Conor...

They do handle OK for what they are.

Most I got out of mine was 70MPG on a 24 mile run at 50MPH. Still averaging above 55MPG which is good enough for me.

:D Yep. Should have added whilst stationary. Otherwise you'll definitely need a new autobox!

Also on a gearbox in good condition: The car should creep along evenly, acceleration should be fairly linear and vibration when you hold it on the brakes should be minimal.

Don't buy an Audi with that daft CVT box then!

Onl'y driven one Mondingo tdci with an auto box and it wasn''t the easiest thing to trundle along in. Prefer the manual.

Well the starter on our 52 plate Mondeo 2.0TDCi died at the start of March and was replaced for £330. Unfortunately it has gone again and the DMF appears to be the cause. I have one quote at £1150 and hope to get a second from another garage but don't hold much hope of it being any cheaper. The big problem is I still like the car and after test driving a few others I think I may just get it fixed and hope I get another 2 to 3 years out of it. Have read about a SMF replacement but don't know if this is false economy. We are fairly low milage owners, less than 10K a year, although it was a high milage when we bought it, now has 115K.

    Dark in here, is't it...

Why on earth is it call a dual mass flywheel? Its only a glorified damper. Most cars manage perfectly well without one. I could wrap some sticky tape round mine and call it one!

Darkstar - your starter problem is a known fault on Ford diesels. Metal fragments from the DMF are attracted to the magnets in the starter causing them to fail.
