no, I don't think it is - you don't need dialling rules - it's for messing about with things like dial prefix for outside line, using prefix for different call providers depending on long-distance or local (more relevant in America), and even calling cards (which you might try later when away from home)

just turn off the tick box for dialling rules, and have the number you want to dial written in the box - I hope that's it

Another thought - how old is the Virgin.net CD you used to configure your connection on the laptop? If its quite old, then it may be you're using an old dial-up number (I recall soon after I left them they changed the number).

Logging into my old account (which I'm surprised they haven't deleted as it hasn't been used for a couple of years!!), shows the standard dial-up number as 0844 054 4020. Is that what you have? (I would hope Virgin tech support already got you to confirm that though :D).

You only get given the dial-up number when you log in to "My Account" - so they give that customer the appropriate dial-up number(s) - eg 0844 for PAYG, 0800 for subscription, etc.

No, no - the number I gave is the correct number. When I say its an old account I logged into (I meant a live account, which I just don't use) - the number I quoted was as stated within the "My Account" area of Virgin.net. I didn't just pull the number off my PC.

Yep, but at least we know its not something as obvious as the wrong telephone number now. Knowing how rubbish Virgin tech support used to be, I thought best to check the blinding obvious.
