new comp & dial up connection - wont work

ok folks... im having a blond moment, i got me posh new lappy and put in the virgin dial up disk in, it whizzed around n did what it should but wont connect, just keeps re dialling.

I phoned the helpline (who were very helpful) and they talked me thro the set up.. OK says i and tried to dial out.. its the same as before.. just keeps dialling..

Im using xp professional if that makes any difference and its got a little wireless thingy but its not enabled.

my poorly desktop is on the dreaded AOL BB and i dont want to put that on me new posh lappy as i will only be accessing T'internet on an occasional basis when away from home (hence dial up)

any thoughts on why it wont connect?

cheers  loops

Phoneline connected properly, Is it a BT line only connection. Is caller ID unavailable
in other words can you see your home telephone number on a mobile.

1470,[normal telephone number] (1470 forces caller ID, comma to put in a pause, followed by your usual dial-up number)

Open Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, Connections Tab,
Settings, Properties, where you see the phone number that dials out
put 1470, infront of the number dont forget the comma then
Ok,Ok,Ok, now exit IE then Re-open IE then try a dial up.

At what stage is it re-dialing? If you have the laptop speaker on, do you hear the dial tone, the number being dialled etc? How far along do the connection status messages get? eg "verifying username and password", etc.

Unplug any phone or BB connection that uses the line. Then dial out.

Edit: If you have two sockets on the PC that say Phone...Line
plug the modem into the one that says Line.
