Dell should have diversified in to other areas such as a software division (own-brand software), or with more forms of income generating online presence.

It had the resources, the brand, and could have made a real impact and become a major challenger to Microsoft, Yahoo, Google in one way or another.

This Dell PC (2004) is fine and I'm not trading up, or buying any fancy new tech, unless it really is revolutionary. And you have more hardware challengers like that Chinese pc maker Levono, who are also feeling the chill.

I'll move to Linux Ubuntu if this Dell pc won't support Windows 7. As far as I know, Dell are just a hardware player.

I understand Windows 7 installs and runs faster than Vista, suggesting it's not so much bloatware.

And I bought a remote control from a Currys store yesterday evening, so I can confirm they were still in business as of then ;)

They take a lot of stick but it has to be said that the stores are convenient and frequently have some good deals. You just have to be choosy about what you buy there and not assume that they offer good prices on everything.

Seems like they managed to organise a whip round and collect enough change to pay for the next months hosting after all.

Yes, I'm sure every member of staff deserves to lose their jobs and struggle to support their family. In the same way your employer is useless and I hope you lose your job too! (except I would never wish that on anybody!!)

Its fair enough people dislike a company and would choose not to shop there again, but isn't that enough? Hoping everyone working for Currys lose their jobs and calling them all useless is offensive to say the least.

I do think some people on this forum lack respect at times

Maybe if the unfriendly, unhelpful and unknowledgable staff were friendlier, more helpful and knowledgable about the products they sell, people would have higher regard for them, people would shop there more, and they wouldn't lose their jobs.

if they go bust, they only have themselves to blame.

I remember arguing with a curry's employee about 12 years ago because he knew nothing and only a month ago (in my final ever visit to one of their stores) I was told by a staff member that he would go to the back and get me what i needed. after waiting for 10 minutes, he was serving someone else and then he went onto the tills!!! useless.

Maybe the fault lies with the company rather than the staff, if decent training is given in the particular line they are working in plus a decent grounding in customer service, then the sales staff could and would be more helpful through confidence in their knowledge and ergo, the customer is happier.

    Training and knowledge is everything.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

    Attitude is important too.
My experience of these places is that they are pretty rubbish. An occasional member of staff has some knowledge, the rest seem capable of nothing more than selling credit.
I actually left the store with more product knowledge than most of their staff simply by reading the cards by the products. Even without any training, a smart and motivated member of staff would start to work out what features what products had.
    Happy chappy

Just been in Currys a short while ago with a friend of mine who is looking for a PVR for his Old Man. Pretty much greeted by this kid as soon as we walked in through the door asking if he could help. My mate asks "yeah whereabouts are your PVRs?". Kid looks at him blankly and then turns to his mate and asks "what are PVRs?" .

THAT is the reason why Currys need to die and no, I have no sympathy for the staff whatsoever because all they are good for is working in scummy jobs where they don't need a brain instead of working in electronics shops where customers expect you to know what you're talking about and understand all the jargon  .

Went into Currys today, needing to buy new tumbledrier, frig and freezer. Asked assistant if any discount for buying more than one appliance - "Oh no, we don't give discounts". Which is precisely why they probably heading for the last round up.
Frankly, why should they give a discount? The profit margin on that sort of thing is rediculously low (i.e. 3%) and people who buy lots of items together usually don't go for the profitable warantees etc anyway.

If you were buying 10 or 50 then perhaps - but not on 3 items.

Its no better than "can you give me a deal on that if I pay by cash" (!!!!!!!)
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.
