Tesco Energy Saving Lightbulbs 5 for 40p

Looks like they fixed the VAT deduction. 40p for 5.0

These new energy saving light bulbs do not give out as much light as the old style bulbs, my wife will not have one in the lamp she uses for reading and I must agree with her, however they are bringing out an improved bulb for which it is claimed the light output is very much better, no doubt until they become widely available they will be expensive.0

Asda in Farnborough had the Phillips 9W and 11W bulbs on special 4 for a pound - certainly the cheapest i have found, not sure if its a local or Asda wide thing0

You'll be changing them within 2 years...I've never had an energy saver that has lasted longer than that, despite the exaggerated claims on the boxes.
I do use some energy saving spotlights and seem to get good mileage from the expensive ones but a cheaper Megaman one is far worse than average for dim startup.0 -
In our local Tesco all we could find were screw-in type bulbs @ 5 for 40p.
Might come in handy some time but not much use right now.
Our son thought he was a great fella when he annonced his bargain on Tuesday night. We were there yesterday.0 -
If you have standard light shades these bulbs are of no use to you they will overlap the fitting and even if they don't they can be seen and they are horrible when will they make this type of fitting in a normal round bulb that fits practically anything when they do I will probably buy them but I bet they will not be 40p for 50

The Government will be paying us to take energy saving bulbs soon when they have to try and offset the extra CO2 from Heathrow to appease the green freaks.0

These are great value, but a pain for all my dimmer switches and touch sensitive lamps. If only I hadn't replaced all my ordinary bulbs when Homebase were selling energy savers at 5 for £1.50!
I think these will be more modern bulbs which are a lot better quality and longer lasting than some of the earlier models.
Just a word of warning about dimmers with energy savers.
These energy savers are essentially fluorescent lights and dimmers work by chopping the current which is not how the fluorescent bulbs are designed to work.
There is a danger of overheating or burn out.
Normally I would have expected the dimmer (and touchlight) to have a prominent warning NOT for use with fluorescent lights.
I am not saying your house will burst into flames, but it may be a possibility.
When I had dimmers many years ago, I remember it said they were DAMAGED by fluorescent lights, even if only on the same wire circuit(for example on the same lighting ring main in the next room).
Be careful.0 -
I tried to buy these today but was told the offer is only on 11w bulbs, my purchase went through the till at 98p each. I'm sick of trying to sort out Tesco offers, I think they rely on people not checking receipts. :mad:0
