Tesco Energy Saving Lightbulbs 5 for 40p

One thing puzzles me about low energy bulbs -
They are said to be unsuitable for enclosed fittings.
Well, before I realised that, I fitted one in our outside porch light, in a small glass fully-enclosed fitting.
That was at least five years ago. It burns every evening during the hours of darkness.
We have never had any problem. So can anyone please explain - why are we advised not to put them in enclosed fittings?0 -
These offers are really good, however I seem to be sent boxes of them every other month by one energy company or another.
One problem, I give them away as I have recently bought a new house and ALL of the light fittings are three pin fittings to ensure that we only use energy saving bulbs. The only places I have been able to find three pin bulbs are online at a LOT higher cost. So we are considering replacing all of our light fixtures.
It is a pity that none of the ones we have been sent, or the ones on these offers do not give you the option of getting the three pin ones.0 -
Has anyone found a) a dimmable bulb at less than £10
b) a spot bulb with a bayonet fitting?
All at rock bottom prices of course!:T0 -
Not sure I'd recommend the Tesco energy-saving bulbs... they take an age to heat up and produce some decent light.
I've got a couple of screw-in 60W equivalents and they barely glow at all for the first couple of minutes after being switched on... they do get steadily brighter but they are definitely not for a place where you want instant light.
I was worried about this too as I've had slow responding and dim energy saving bulbs in the past. But pleased to say I've bought these tesco ones on offer at Prestwich Manchester (been on sale there for 2 days and still had plenty in store today) in the 40w, 60w and 100w equivalents and they are excellent. They come on very quickly and bright - almost maximum brightness from start, and have a pleasing soft white quality to the light. No problem where you need instant light.0 -
Could it be that suppliers are trying to get rid of stocks of the low energy bulbs as a result of recent studies into harmful UV emissions and the Health and Safety Executive OC issued a few days ago at http://www.hse.gov.uk/foi/internalops/fod/oc/500-599/559-9.htm ?. I can see many people reverting back to GLS lamps when this information becomes more widespread.0

this should alleviate any concerns about the bulbs; in short it's not an issue unless you're within 2cm
"Not all open fluorescent light bulbs have significant UVR emissions but if people are in very close proximity to some of them, the exposure to bare skin is like being outside in direct sunlight. For example, scientists found that when very close (2 cm, less than one inch) to some open CFLs, the UVR level can be equivalent to that experienced outside on a sunny day in the summer and so some precaution is warranted. When further away (over 30 cm or one foot), the UVR level is much lower and less than being outside on a sunny day in winter, which is not a concern."0 -
Had always been put off these by the cost and low performance but when you compare the dramatic reduction to 10 for 58p and the dramatic rise in the cost of electricity it is hard not to swallow your pride and give it a go.
Good to see there are halogen ones available too (thanks flying_andrewl) shame about the price but hopefully that will come down too.If money saving starts to involve irritation or frustration the fine line between thrift and greed should be examined.0 -
First thing I had to do on my new house 18 months ago. Replacement bulbs for these were about £8 and the fittings were so big you couldn't fit a standard lampshade on them. Thankfully its not a difficult or expensive job to change them. These offers are really good, however I seem to be sent boxes of them every other month by one energy company or another.

Put in our first energy saving bulbs about 8 years ago when got free with the loft insulation. All the bulbs in the house are now Energy savers. This weekend the first one went - must have been 6 years old at least.
(Remember to dispose of them properly BTW)0 -
