The "Loose Change Pays Your Debt 2009" Challenge

Searched for a challenge like this but couldnt find one, so thought I would post it up.

I have a savings pot that counts my change (bought in WHsmith for about £7) when I put it in, my aim is to put all loose change I have into it and see how much I can pay towards debts/put into savings in 2009.

The aim is to get to your target (e.g. £20, mine is £50) as quickly as possible, then pay it towards a debt or save it, and save as much as possible!!

  • I think I might join you with my five pence jar?

I am in the sealed pot challenge and the 2 pound coin challenge and do sometimes think I am saving too much change and should be putting it towards a debt!

so I will use my 5p's (cos they annoy me!!) to pay towards the cc.

    Morning all,

Just wanted to let you know that the 5p's add up really quickly and they are so small and fiddly I am always pleased to get them out of my purse. We have set up a 5p jar at Lewby Villas for my daughters University Fund.

Over Christmas I got back on here and she became a bit interested in what I was always doing on the computer  . She's 16 and since she's been at college in September we worked out that she has spent £800 on 'nothing'! She doesn't know where it has gone but when prompted she remembers buying clothes, shoes, trainers, cd's, makeup, books, etc etc. She was totally shocked to have spent so much!

I explained that I was doing this to get debt free so that we could afford to support her through Uni (she wants to be a doctor so 5 years+ there) and she realised that she needed to start saving to contribute herself. She opened a savings account there and then and we came up with the idea of getting jars and handing them to family members asking them to save their 5p's for her.

She has decorated the jars and has put a label on that says 'Please could you spare your little 5p's to help me with my Uni fees'. Both Nans, 2 x Uncles and 2 x Aunties have got jars and have pledges to save their 5p's for 18 months til she goes to Uni. It will be exciting to see how much she collects. She also asks her friends if they have any 5p's and can she have them, and as they are so small they are happy to oblige! It's begging on some small level but I'm hoping that she will understand the concept that my Mum always told me (and I totally ignored!) of "If you look after the pennies the pounds will look after themselves". Maybe I should make some jars for friends and family - 'Every 5p helps me get debt free!'. :rotfl:

So we have a 5p 'Uni Fund' jar and will keep an eye on how quickly it builds up. The 5p's are so small it will take ages to fill a jar!!!

    Good luck with the challenge.

    Lewby xx

  • I have today set up a Bathroom fund, have a huge whisky bottle for the cause. I know I'm looking at the £1000's and don't expect to do this before next year but you gotta start somewhere right ?

Now I need a clever slogan for my bottle, something about spending a penny ?

My savings pot currently shows £47.70 so today I will have a look round the house and car to see if I can get to my first £50 and then I can cash it!!

  • Hiya

I would love to join this challenge. I already save all my small change as I try to pay for stuff with cash and not by card cos its easier to see what I'm spending. And I regularly raid my hubby's pockets and wallet for change.

My aim with this challenge is to either clear my nasty virgin credit card or my nasty lloyds overdraft or both.

Please add me to the list.

    Thanks

  • Hiya

I've got my change counter. Done the DFW way of course. Its by birthday on Sunday and I'm getting my hubby to pay for it as a birthday present.

I can't wait to put all my change in my new money jar.... god that sounds so sad!!! But even more I can't wait to pay off some debt with the money that I save.
