Not quite a NYC question, but what would folks suggest as the best / nicest way to get to Washington from NYC??
I just came across this yesterday: I saw that the Amtrak train takes about 3h30 and costs $72 one way. Not sure if it is nice or if there are other alternatives.
PS: There was a great bus service from Las Vegas to LA, hotel to hotel, which I highly recommend so there might be something similar for you. Just a thought. Also interested in finding out.0 -

Perhaps not the 'nicest' but most likely the cheapest is Megabus www.megabus.com/us0 -
hi all, iv been to new york 3 times in 2 years,in spring, summer and winter and absolutely love it!
if you are going and want to stay in a great hotel, try the helmsley park lane on central park south, it overlooks central park, totally beautiful! have also stayed at the grand hyatt on 42nd st, the room was definitley not to my liking, only plus was the hotel restaurant and lobby!
have also stayed at the hilton on 6th ave during christmas week and walked everyday to magnolia bakery for their banana cake! had a good room at the hilton but strangely i kept getting those electric shocks in the room, got to the point where i didnt want to touch anything electrical!
food wise i recommend staying away from the jekyll and hyde restaurant, its so bland but the theme is great...my fave eatery was Sarabeths on Central park south and the best cheesecake i ever had was at juniors in brooklyn and the hilton hotel restaurant called marketplace on 6th ave.0 -

ta!
Easy..
get the airtrain through to Jamaica Station, and then get the E Train to Lexington Ave 53rd St Station.
You're then 2 blocks away... one west, one south, and you'll be there...0 -
Oooo I'll be there in 3.5 weeks - I'm struggling to get too excited atm though since I have the small matter of a marathon to run first0

Ooooh I am so excited - we are finally going on Wednesday. I have made so many notes of what Marky has said to help me, it's almost easier to take him along..................0

Bus can be cheap and not too bad-Nice price!
China Bus thread lists the pros and cons with GotoBus listing the various options and Operators
We travelled back from Was to NYC using Washington Deluxe and it was OK if full!
Used Eastern to get from Philly to WAS. This was Ok too.
I've used Amtrak and that was good. If you buy earlier then the price can be reasonable.0 -

Hi, again,
still struggling with the airline options. I was hoping for a cheaper flight!!
It's my first time in NYC and on the West Coast. We are travelling in August to attend a conference and I would like to maximize the places we see this time. I am thinking of about 2 weeks, flying into Boston , then heading towards NYC, then flying back from Washington. However, it will depend on the total budget and it might nly include Boston or Washington, or simply New York. I'm at that stage where the planning is chaotic and anything is possible!!
I could really use your help since I don't know a lot about HOW to do this.
Here are my thoughts so far for the "bigger" trip:
- flying into Boston: 2 days in Boston to visit
- from Boston to NYC:
A simple option would be to take the train, but there will be 4 of us so it might be cheaper to drive. An alternative is to take the bus. I have researched megabus and boltbus (nor prices for august though).
I would like to rent a car and visit some of the area outside of Boston, eventually making our way into new york. It gives us the flexibility to travel outside the main cities.Where should we head?
I was thinking of visiting the Wooburry Commons outlet from NYC using a Grayline tour, but since this is a bit expensive, it might be worthwhile to visit it on our way to NYC from Boston...
About the rent-a-car: can someone suggest a rental service with convenient locations to rent in one place and return in another place? I have done this in other countries. Another thing is where to return the car in NYC. I really wouldn’t want to drive in to the centre if it is too overwhelming. Would it be better for me to return it to an airport location?
Any hotel suggestions along the way?
Would it be better simply to take the train or bus into NYC?
- NYC to Washington:
Again by train would be easier. Blindman has just suggested the Washington Deluxe and it looks like a good and cheap alternative.
But renting a car in NYC (any suggestions for a convenient location?) might be cheaper and would allow us to do some travelling along the way.
The same questions again:
Places to visit along the way? I would like to visit amish country, is this a big detour?
Places to stay?
- I mentioned the Wooburry Commons outlet because this looks extremely comprehensive and it is possible to simply take the tour from NYC. Is there a more convenient outlet for us to visit given our itinerary?
I would really welcome suggestions and links to other pages or post that can help me plan. This all seems too overwhelming at this stage. I can simply fall back onto the plan Boston – bus – NYC – bus – Washington, but I really think that renting a car for both legs would add some nice sights to our tip and make it memorable.
Thanks in advance for your help.0
