Hi,
Need advice from people who have visited NY with a kid.
I am going next week and was trying to book a shuttle service from JFK to Manhattan and then found they don't take kids without appropriate child restraint seats. (My daughter is 3 yrs old).
I am worried now because I've booked a coach tour as well now from NY to Washington DC.....
Can somebody guide me?0 -
Renting a car in NYC is NEVER a good idea.... if you've never been, but have driven in london, take london traffic, double it, make sure that no one looks where they are going, and lots of one way streets only...
DO NOT rent a car inside NYC
with boltbus you can always get seats at $1 if you book far enough in advance.. and they have wifi on board!0 -
Only 3 weeks and 2 days until my trip now.

We're going to NY next week.
Can anyone recommend a travel guide? (a book, not a guy lol).
I don't want those mammoth ones like the Time Out one, which is 400 pages. Under 100 pages would be good. Mostly interested in sight seeing. Could care less about restaurants, bars and clubs tbh. Wouldn't mind seeing a Broadway show but I'll like to see something that you can't find in London. Something like "NY on a budget" would be right up my street. hehe.
I realise this is probably a little late for you, but a handy book, which isn't too big, is the Top 10 guide to New York. I use these for most cities I go to, as they fit easily into a bag. It has the subway map in and a good city plan too. Perfect if you're going for a few days and for the 1st time, as you can pick off the best things on it. (It's by Dorling Kindersley who do the Eye Witness guides, but a shortened version)0 -

Very easy to get the subway from JFK. We've stayed at the New Yorker twice and the entrance to the subway is almost at the front door - it's right on that intersection and it was on the "A" train line, which goes direct to JFK. You can look here to see if it goes near your particular hotel.
We usually buy a week's subway pass anyway, so it means a "free" (well, included) trip both to and from the airport, and being a big shopper that means all the more dollars for me to spend. Not sure I'd do it for somewhere that involved changing trains tho, esp if you've a lot of luggage (like I have on the way back...)
Don't know why you think a taxi would be "horrendous" tho??0 -

DO NOT rent a car inside NYC
However, if you want to do some driving outside NYC, then use Hertz, and make your pick up or drop off point North White Plains, where the Hertz depot is closer to the train station than most ticket offices are to the trains in the UK.
IIRC it's a bit over an hour from Grand Central Station, where we and the boys spent a happy hour or so just gawping!
We picked up there, then returned to JFK at the end of our stay, after I'd got used to driving an automatic on the wrong side of the road. That worked really well, but no way would I have tried to do anything more central than that!
Wish I could remember whose bright idea it was, 'cos I would give him credit if I could!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

cheapest way is always to walk, as that is free.. but it quite a distance
ok... this kinda question has cropped up a few times in the past few weeks, so again, first page, guide to getting into and around manhattan. i'm sure it covers most of the ways of getting into NYC.. if people read it.0 -
Going to hire a car from Newark to Cape May for 6 nights. Will be driving back to NYC for a stay, before flying back from JFK.
Where would be a good place to drop the car off before hitting the traffic in NYC? Staying Madison Square Gardens.
NB. Have a wheelchair to consider, just to add another element of excitement!
Many thanks for any info.

Well, there is a lift at the train station at North White Plains, and it is very close to the Hertz depot and a bit over an hour out from Grand Central Station. I wasn't assessing that for wheelchair friendliness, but I do remember some impressively long ramps.
We drove from North White Plains to Wildwood (just up from Cape May but rather less refined!), stopping in New Brunswick to break the journey (and do the washing!) On the way back we went whale watching from Cape May in the afternoon, then drove back to New Brunswick and on to JFK the next day. Nice easy drives.
Perhaps Hertz should start giving me commission ...Signature removed for peace of mind0
