i am not brave enough to try priceline , but are these in a good location for sightseeing and a subway....IS grand central the main tube station ?
The affina is 4 blocks down from 5th ave subway, where the 7 runs through or 1 block over and 2 up from rockerfeller center station, which has the B,D,F and V running through it.
The doubletree is closest to a subway, 51st street, which has the 6 running through it.
Your next question may be "ahh but where do these subways run too" well have a lookie lookie here:
http://www.mta.info/nyct/maps/submap.htm
this is the map of the subway stations running up and down manhattan
Grand central is a busy subway station however the likes of times square subway has twice as many subway lines running through it. Its pretty easy to navigate the NY subway system, and if the line your on is'nt where you want to get to its just a matter of changing lines or walking a few blocks to your destination.
If you are concerned about locations of hotels, in realtion to "the sights" I would suggest popping on to gogglemaps and entering the name of the hotel then going on a virtual wander, you will also notice the subway stations marked with an M and they will also tell you what line runs through each station.Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0 -

Its was everyones first time once and going to any new place can be daunting, at least when you go to the States you have a common language, well kinda, and each time ive been to NY ive always been impressed with how helpful people are when it comes to directions etc.
On my first jaunt I bought myself a guide book and decided all the places I would like to go, ie top of the rock, central park, times square, staten island ferry etc etc etc and a list of shops mrs phatbear wanted to visit ie tiffanys tiffanys and ermmm tiffanys. Then made myself a google map and plotted all of the locations I wanted to go, this gave me a better idea of what things were close to each other rather than running up and down the island, for example esb is 2 blocks away from macys etc. then planned a really loose itenary, ie day 1 shopping, day 2 sightseeing lower manhattan etc of course you can change this when you are there dependant on weather and how you feel.
NYC has, with the exception of London I would argue, one of the easiest transport systems in the world, again a common language helps. So in no time you will be a subway pro.
Key thing is you arent sure ask!! either on here or tripadvisor where you will get more responses from locals or when you are there.Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0 -
BOOKED! Staying in Edison Hotel just off Times Square.
6-16th June.
We leave NYC on the evening of the 6th so if ya see a bear like creature being dragged around the shops for some last minute shopping give me a wave!!!!Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0 -
All, I've thanked individually on specific posts but just thought I'd pen this to oficially thank any and all who've offered some advice to me on this thread and in PM's.
It took a while but I managed to read almost all of it and the guides are great for someone who starts from a position of knowing nothing!
I managed to grab a good deal through travelbag for the flights (LHR-JFK) march 2nd to 6th for £280 each and then (after some minor hiccups) booked the Cosmopolitan Hotel.
We're putting together a list of places/things we'd like to do and see with the top of my list being the NHL game at MSG on the 4th - although it might be interesting to see the reaction of those around me when I'm cheering for the away team!!
I'll endeavour to supply some kind of trip report when we return and will hopefully be able to return the favour of offering 'expert' opinions on all things NYC thereafter.
Thanks again, Martmonk.0 -

**explodes with excitement**
143days to go...
You will have to pop into the "Cafe Edison" or as the locals call it "The Polish Tea Rooms" on the ground floor of the hotel for breakfast one morning ! My wife and I love it, and the price is good. If you can ask to sit at the counter where you can watch the cooking, the washing up, the comings and goings of the waiters which is entertaiment in it's self !
My wife and I are returning to NY for the 13th time this May and as Phatbear says just ask for help, we have never had any bother asking directions. The best advice again is to plan the holiday day by day, buy the Metrocard and hop on a bus or use the subway. If you get a free newspaper in the hotel check for coupons to use in Macys (sometimes better than the other discount)
Have a nice day
