Does anyone know if I would be able to take a British extension plug bar, stick a converter on the end and use it with the British plugs?
Asking cos I was told there's not many electrical points in the Edison's hotel rooms...
Cheers! The flip side of sanity is the game.0 -

Another question...what options are there for evening entertainment with a 12year old?
I stayed at the Holiday Inn 57th. It was fine for what we needed. (A base to explore basically) The rooms were clean and tidy, The beds were huge!! Its a fab location aswell, literally 2 blocks to Central Park, about 6/7 down to Times Square. Plus Tiffanys is literally a block away! Also Carniegie Hall is just up the road.
If you do stay there, dont order room service ($18 for 1 cheesy chips) but go to the deli a couple doors down, (Roosevelt deli IIRC) its fab, huge breakfasts, huge burgers and really really good value for money.0 -

Just to be on the extra safe side, you could simply call the hotel you are likely to book and inquire politely that you are thinking of taking your toddler along and what is their policy on that.0 -
last time i was in New York i went over to liberty island and to be honest i wasnt impressed.
going again in 4 weeks :j but with my mum and a friend so obviously they want to get a good view of statue.
just wondering if staten island ferry is a nice alternative to get a good (and free!) view of the statue.
any one actually been over to staten island? any good? or is it better just getting straight back on the boat?
is the port far from the liberty island terminal at battery park?
thanks0 -
You will find the best traditional pizza in one of the neighbourhoods on Staten Island but its not easy to get to, involves a bus trip. Tiny place where an Italian family have been making pizza there for decades but I can remember what its called. Other than that there isn't much there to see.
On the S.I ferry you can see the statue but its not as close as if you get on the Island ferry, depends what you want from it really. The S.I terminal is just a little further along in Battery Park0 -

This is an alternative used by lots of tourists and I really enjoyed it. Just head to the right side of the boat since this will give you the view on the way to Staten Island. I wasn't willing at the time to put up with the planning that getting to the statue of liberty involved, namely pre.booking slots, then the huge queues to enter the statue etc. So we used the moneysaving alternative. This is a commuter ferry, but I can tell you 90% of the people were tourists.
When we arrived at SI we were not allowed back in the ferry. We had to leave the boarding area. Some people ran to the already full ferry about to leave on another area, but we decided to have a look around. There wasn't much to do. I had counted on at least a coffee shop, but this was one empty terminal. They had several indications on what to do in SI, including maps on the wall. Nothing caught our fancy so we just waited 30 minutes and took the next available ferry. Lots of people waiting and very few places to seat. A couple of homeless people were around making everyone feel a bit unconfortable especially since one clearly had mental problems and kept talking to himself. Sad really.
Anyway, for a cheap and 1 -hour experience I think this is highly recommended. In your case, since you were not impressed with your previous experience, I think this is perfect. Schedule this for the first day in NY; if your mom and friend would like the full treatment after getting the 1-hour SI ferry, then you can still plan a full trip to the statue later in your stay. For us it was more than enough: you get close to the statue on the way out and on the way in! Way too many photos! On the way back we just sat inside near a window and opened it for some more photos. No point standing outside.0 -

I am curious: what is the drill in the cases where one books a hotel that is not open by the time of the booking? Does the hotel have to put you elsewhere of the same quality or features? Or do they simply cancel the booking closer to the date and you get left with only overpriced options since you did not book early enough?0 -
