Right, have been reading this forum for past 18 months and finally saved enough to buy flights to NYC for our 10yr wedding anniversary in Oct.....
totally understand why Marky moo and all other wise peeps avoid Times Sq, and love the idea of UWS/UES where we can get a cheapER beer and maybe some live music without feeling like we're being ripped off, but have no idea which hotels to start looking at....are staying for 3 nights 1-4 Oct
would like to keep hotel costs low, and do TOTR on ann. night as our treat, but NEED my own bathroom too and clean, relatively quiet rooms
~Looking forward to all your esteemed advice!0 -
hieveryone wrote: »What do you mean by the £839 including flights? Is that the total cost of your flights?
Also, is there any particular reason you want to go for 10 nights?
I just don't get how your original post said 2k each? I've no idea how NY could cost that much unless you're flying first class with Virgin lol
I reckon you could get flights and hotel for well under £2k - for both of you.
The we have to include spending money. I was saying we should take about 1k each... Dunno how much is right though.
I didn't look it up, my better half did, I'd need to get him to sign into the expedia n check this again. I don't remember it showing a full breakdown of costs. The flip side of sanity is the game.0 -

How lovely...
Hey I stayed upper east at the Marmara Manhattan in Dec 08
Lovely place - some noise in the am only from huge lorrys but otherwise ok - they are still doing subway work which didnt bother us as we went over the holiday season, so bear in mind if you choose to go there.0 -
Hi there sorry, its £839 pp for the flights and the hotel, so £1678 for both of us.

Ah I see, get you now. £1678 isn't too bad for the both of you, but I bet you could get it cheaper.
Try going onto Continentals website direct - they fly direct from Glasgow to Newark.
Also, I was just wondering why you decided on 10 days? Is this your first time to NY? 10 days is a lot to spend in the city I feel personally, 7 would be enough, save you money on hotels and allow more spends?

My partner worked there after 9/11 for a few months and would like very much to go back. If i remember rightly there wasn't much price difference between 7 and 10 days so we opted for 10. I have never been to NY.The flip side of sanity is the game.0 -
It's no problem, I love NY, I lived and worked there in 2008, was fab!
I do hope you get something booked, although I know I couldn't trust myself with 10 days! I'm only going for 4 and I know I will get through some amount of money! lol

Oooh sounds fab- can I be dead cheeky and ask how much you paid and via where?
Thanks!

Hello,
I'm currently typing this message from my hotel room at the Cosmo Hotel in Tribeca
I thought I'd add a few musings...
* As you're reading this message then you probably are doing the right thing and researching your trip...unfortunately I didn't have chance to do much planning (booked last minute as Mr Squee's work sent him out here) and I feel that I've probably wasted a lot of time so make an itinery. Have some 'plan B' options in case the weather or horrific queues scupper plan A.
* As mentioned above, be prepared for a lot of queuing for attractions. Maybe this is cos it's a busy time of year but be prepared anyhoo!
* If you are planning on catching some live bands then give the NYE time of year a miss - doesn't seem the best time of year for gigs.
* If staying at the Cosmo hotel then try the breakfast rolls from the street vendor opposite the hotel on Chambers Street...the BEST ever bacon and sausage butties and only $3.75 for one and a coffee.
* Also on Chambers Street is the Patriot Bar which is utterly fab if you like cheap booze and barmaids dancing on the tables. We spent last night (NYE) here and I bet we had much more fun then those at Times Square.
* Although I can't compare to other hotels in NYC, the Cosmopolitan is fantastic and clearly a bargain for the city. Some reviews say that the rooms are small but we've not found it a problem. Friendly staff to and no porters/doormen so no embarrasing fumbles searching for dollar bills for tips every ten minutes!
* Don't be afraid of riding the subway - very safe and very efficient.
* I'll advise once again - make a plan for your stay else you will waste a lot of time!
Also, this is a question for PhatBear... I take it you work at an airport customs...? Can you tell me why one may get picked to be searched entering the US? Myself and Mr Squee were ushered into the red channel and spent an unpleasant hour waiting to have our luggage searched. Is it at random that they pick people? Although we were travelling together we had to book our flights seperate as Mr Squee's company paid for his flight - do single travellers tend to get stopped more?
Right, I'm off to have a pint of Bud at the Patriot
