because its winter and the sun is low and there are so many tall buildings very often sidewalks are always in the shade and never had the chance to warm up
how cold is it in Jan ??? depends could just be freezing or fackin brass monkeys
we went feb 07 and it was -40 on the plane (had to wait over a hour until the plane doors thawed out) -7 around times square during the day and -11 at Battery Park waiting for the Staten Island Ferry which we declined. Count into the windchill factor and i have never felt cold like the first morning in NYC wrap up very well

I think I've under estimated how cold it's gonna be! we go in 15 days :o

Can anyone recommend a good comedy club?

DEBT FREE for the first time in 10 years and with savings!

    1st Baby due May 2011 :o it's a BOY:j
  • @Leni - I've been to Carolines on Broadway (https://www.carolines.com) which has fairly high profile comics on though can be a bit pricier than other comedy clubs in the city as a result. It also has a 2 drink minimum last time I knew.

I just asked my brother the same question....he went in January...he said it was so cold that you couldn't look up towards the sky/skyscrapers

Wrap up warm...a scarf is a must!
    Back on it!
  • A beanie hat and gloves are also recommended...

Remember also that while you obviously have to wrap up warm to cope with the cold outdoor conditions, you should wear layers that are easily removable as all buildings (tourist spots, shops, eateries, bars etc) will be very well heated.

Layers were good when I went in Jan this year - as an example I wore:
vest, tights, skirt, boots, jumper, second jumper, coat, scarf, hat and muff (for my hands as gloves are a right pain on the subway when you are trying to swipe the tickets ;)) and I was still freezing!

    9 days and counting....

Would anyone who gets back in the next week please report on the weather. I'm taking DD and she's not too bothered about taking a warm coat:rolleyes:.

Starting to feel excited, this will last until 2 days before take off when I will get a massive guilt trip about leaving DH with the 4 younger siblings.

Thanks to posters for details of toy shops as I have to bring them all back presents. Is PS3 software any cheaper?

This thread has been the best thing about our trip, I've learned so much useful information. Thanks to all the regulars - you really make it easy for me:T
  • PS3 software doesn't really work out much cheaper in my experience. Chains like Gamestop and Best Buy sell new titles for $60 which is about £40 so it's fairly comparable to UK stores like Game, HMV etc.
