I walked from the Ferry to TOTR actually Marky - but then I am a nutter
(it seemed a good way to see NY at the time - started at Battery park, mooched up the winter gardens, over to world trade centre, then onto Wall St, then to the Bridge, then to Chinatown, then up to washington Sq park, then up to union sq and flatiron and then up broadway (we skipped around TS as we had seen it the night before) - I had ruddy sore feet afterwards though :eek:0 -
Thanks for replying, I will get a guide book and keep going through the site, it offers wonderful advice and ideas.

angelheart, to add to markymoo's most helpful advice, get several guidebooks, or tell the different branches of the family to get a different one each, borrowed from the library if necessary, and let each person make their own short 'must see' list. You'll most likely find the same things on several lists, BUT you can also split the group up.
And to get the most out of it, you'll have to, IMO. Mum will not want to walk far, and may need more taxis than the youngsters. Not everyone will want to do the Museum of Modern Art, or the shopping. Wandering along the street, you may spot something you want to do that you hadn't planned.
So don't try to plan it to the last detail before you go, and don't plan it too full.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I'm not sure I agree 100% with the avoid Times Square advice- I agree that often it isn't the best value for money-especially considering how little time is spent there but if you can get something reasonable at the right price it can be fun especially on a short trip. We bid for mid-town west on priceline a couple of years ago and got the Crowne Plaza @ Times Square and it was fab for a quick theatre/shopping visit and dirt cheap.
But at the other extreme I once booked the Hilton at Newark airport and used it as a base to attend a show at BB Kings on W 42nd Street on the way home from a trip to Cleveland. Worked very well as the airport bus goes to the Port Authority which is almost opposite BB Kings -after the show I went out to dinner and caught the airport bus back sometime after midnight and then was a hop and skip (OK a coffee and a shuttle bus) to check in for the Virgin flight the next morning.

Flying into JFK. For one week, looking for accommodation only with transfers. where is the best place to stay, which is value for money with a budget of £200/300.
Why is hotels so expensive in New York???
Thank you0 -
Same reasons London is-supply and demand and cost of building land
(and you really don't want transfers for New York)
That budget of £200-300 is that per night or for the whole week ? One or two people travelling ?
I good rule of thumb is to work out what that budget would get you in London regarding quality and location New York is generally similar.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Even worse than London as there is even less space!!!
Also the same thing goes with regards to quailty - if its cheap its usually gross so make friends with trip advisor before you book or may end up in a flea pit!
I can recommend Belleclaire if you want basic but clean on UWS0 -
£300 for a week (7 nights) is just unfeasible in NYC for a hotel, and also most major cities in the UK. your budget is £43 per night, so take 15% straight off that for taxes, so, £37 before tax, which is not even $60 per night.
You will NOT get a private bath at that kinda price, and are probably looking at a hostel/shared bunk bed room... really could do with dates, but you need to double your budget to get a hotel at that price..
as for transfers, it'll cost you $7.25 to get the airtrain and subway to near your chosen destination0
