Right, went back to expedia and got someone a hell of a lot more helpful.

£699 only covers taxes and charges within the UK, this includes flight taxes.

HOWEVER

You are liable for any taxes applied by the hotel at the destination. In this case occupancy tax - 5 nights at 14.25% which roughly works out at £150 PLUS there is another tax which i cannot find the rate for so you could end up paying nearly £200 more for your holiday.

Just booked flights for me, Dh, DD (14) DS (10) to go to New York next April for 5 nights. Flights with BA cost £1062 all incl. which seemed quite a good deal. None of us have been before and I am now tasked with finding hotel, transport from airport to hotel, and ideas of what to see and do. I will scroll through the previous 87 pages(!) of forum posts, but just wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction for suggestions?

Which is why i like to book with hotelconxions or quikbook as they show prices that INCLUDE taxes, and calculate it all for you, whereas expedia bury their heads in the sand, and let you take the clobber when you hit the USA...

Does anyone have an opinion on whether it is better to visit in December than January? Have been to NY previously during summer months and want to come back and experience it during winter and ideally see some snow! Can get flights for same price though hotels much more expensive in December, am happy to pay difference if December a better time to visit.

Hotel - Cosmopolitan through hotelconxions. Then I bought several small guidebooks and gave one to each boy with a set of post-it notes, told them to mark things they wanted to do so we could plan an itinerary. They didn't, of course, so we winged it, but we even stayed an extra night so they could cycle round Central Park and we could go to MoMA.

I know about hotelconnexions Mark, but this deal was £444 off, which of course is too good to be true. But imagine how many people have gone for similar offers and got stung at the end.

I gave customer services a thick ear over the ambiguous wording, not that it made an ounce of difference.

We have'nt had to pay any extra the last 2 times we went to Ny with expedia.

well the guy on the phone more or less said i would have to as expedia only covers uk taxes.

but £444 off doesn't mean anything when it comes to expedia, because probably you could get the rate from another website alone, without taxes, without having to do it as one of expedia's deals..

now there are some hotels that you PREPAY, then all taxes are included, but if you're going for a rate, that is a POSTPAY, then taxes are NOT included.

the problem is, working out which ones are which and what taxes will need to be paid afterwards.

thus, my original point, of booking the price you see the price you pay, from many other websites...

Hello

I've been looking into booking 7 days to NY and was looking at taking a hotel & flight package but after reading some feedback on hear about expedia and charges once in NY i'm not so sure.

Would other MSE users recommend booking a package or getting the flights and hotel book independantly ?

I understand the package would offer ATOL protection but if you wanted to take a chance would there be significant savings ?
