what do you mean nowhere near the location? it will take you 8 minutes to get from Chambers Street to 34th Street.. i know, as i've done it many a time myself! i'm not just recommending it for the sake of it, I'm actually recommending it because i know IT WORKS!!!

everything is so close in NYC when you look at the subway. You've said you don't like the Penn Hotel which is the closest to one shop, so just stay anywhere, which is within your budget!
  • Hi Markymoo would you recommend that I try and get, and look at the subway map before I go to make myself familar with it, or is it quite simple to work out when you are there (like London), do you think I will need a map of the city to get around I want to use the subway and walk as much as possible. And do you have any advice on the shuttle buses from airport.

I'm not Marky...but you can download a map from the MTA website - its a bit rubbish (i.e. not an active pdf) but its here:
    http://www.mta.info/nyct/maps/submap.htm

However, I never used it - the only things to remember are to check the little 'maps' on the posts on the platforms to see if the express stops where you are going and if not you usually need to switch sides of the platform to catch the local. And to make sure you enter the subway for the direction you want - uptown to go up the street numbers and downtown to go down - it really is easy.

The only thing I found weird was there are no electronic displays of the next train which is a bit annoying - late at night you can be waiting a while for a local train. Oh and if you're using it a lot get a travel card :D.

Its much easier than London to use - since there arent any branch lines to watch for! And if you get lost poeple are really kind and will help you out and on the trains are little 'maps' with lights on to show you the next stops :D

    Hope that helps!

Get a(tourist) map and find your landmarks. Manhattan has a grid system for roads which is so easy to use eg.. if you are walking past 34th st to 35th st the next one is 36th st. Avenues go across streets
If you think London Subway is easy NY you will have no problem .
My only thought when you come above ground from the subway you lose our bearings so find a reference point you know (esb/ central park/MSG) and the station or street you are at . We walked through a small street by Grand Central Station to get a good look at the Chrysler Building onto main road and couldnt see it so we had to ask a deli worker Only for her to point directly up and say "you mean this Chrysler Building"
 hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world

I think part of the reason why people from the UK find the subway weird is because the map isnt schematic like we're used to - it does take a bit of getting used to the lines squiggling all over the place and the map looks really intimidating...

the chinese coach companies do trip to DC.. takes about 4 hours on coach, around $30 return for the coach fare each, and then you can do your own thing or book a tour seperately...

This little guide may help you decide if the China bus (or BoltBus\ or Megabus) is for you.

the subway is simple in NYC, the only thing to look out for really is the local and express trains... normally different platforms, but you walk down the stairs, and one platform is for express, and the other is for local..

if you're unsure, get a local.. if you know where you're going, example, big stations, so chambers street (where the cosmo hotel is) to 34th street (where macys is) you can get an express..

once you've worked that out, you'll have no problems..

canal street station is a pain in the bum though, the signposts there ain't really clear and there are quite a few platforms... other than that.. it is easy!

i do have a guide (linked on page 1) to getting in and around Manhattan, and this covers the subway in more detail!!
