Maddeningly, I found it really hard and am still learning although have managed two coasters and half a baby blanket.
I learn best watching other people, I really struggle froma book or pattern because I can't visualise it, yet if I watch a u tube video I am much better, good luck.
Tru they look excellent, I am going to treat myself this week to some brightly coloured ones:DStarted Self Managed DMP 10th May 2017.

i prefer to see too rather than read, for my flowers and hearts above i watched youtube at least you can pause and go back which helps.0

I have used a mixture of You Tube and Attic 24. I really struggled with You tube alone but it gave me the start I needed and Attic 24 finished it off!0

Hmm... have you tried using a metal hook with a cotton yarn?
A wooden hook with a fuzzy acrylic would be a nightmare - especially for beginners. Some yarns are just more fuzzy and fluffy than others. And wood is more likely to "catch" than metal.
Other tip: make your sts a bit large/loose. Don't worry too much about neatness and tension. (That will come later.) Tbh, the hardest bit is simply hooking into your initial starting chain - tricky if your loops are too tight. Once you've got your first row/rnd done, then it flows much more easily.0 -

I have taught myself to crochet and can master granny squares and blankets, but would love to do one of these zigzag type blankets but can't find a pattern, can anyone point me in the right direction?
I started off using a bigger crochet hook than advised and found it so much easier then gradually went down sizes to what the hook should be. I used the book crochet unravelled and found it very helpful.Every days a School day!0 -
Thank you for your replies! My hooks are my great nan's metal one, they possibly date back to the forties! I've started watching tutorials on utube and I've got to say it easier for me than looking at a book. I am pleased to say that I have gone a granny square tonight. It's a bit gappy but its an ideal blanket for a barbie doll for my daughter. I'm desperate to crack this!! X0
