How are you getting on? Have you started the Japanese Flower Scarf yet? Do you like the new yarn?

    Hi Jessie15,

No, I haven't started the scarf yet, I'm trying to be very controlled ;), although the yarn is so very soft and tempting me all the time. I expect you have nearly finished yours by now. I'm still trying to work out how to join them as I go along, I've been studying all the photos I can find.

I have been trying to concentrate all my efforts on my Ripple blanket, but..... have just ripped it all out, back to the first stripe, as I wasn't very pleased with the result. I had interspersed the double colour rows with 2 single rows after every 2 lots of double rows, and the end result was that it didn't seem to sit right. So after completing about 50cms I just knew I wasn't going to be happy with it, so it had to go :mad::mad:.

I am now continuing with 2 rows of each colour and it is so much better.

Could you let me know if you find a successful way of joining the japanese flowers please, and I am longing to see how you are getting along with yours.
  • Hi, I just bought a crochet hook and some wool as I wanted to start crocheting, seen a few vids on utube.

I went to hobbycraft hoping to find a kit or something for beginners to make, but they didnt have anything. Since Ive never crocheted before I just bought what looked like a medium sized hook and some wool.

I gave it a go last night and I think the wool I bought is to thin, what is the best type of wool to start off with?

    The hook I have is a 6.00m.m?
Not sure on the wool it says uk8 4mm and soft spun if that means anything? :o
  • hi all

just popped in to say thanks for the inspiration for the Japanese flower scarf. I have started one myself :)

Drummer82 have you got any wool shops close by? Might be worth popping in and asking re the yarn and hooks to get you started. My local one does drop in sessions for knitting and crochet so you may be lucky and be able to get some one on one help? Our local library also does beginner courses.

when I started out I had a 4 or 5mm hook and some basic double knit wool from the charity shop and kept watching YouTube videos until it clicked.
  • drummer82 Same advice as In a pickle. In fact I use a 4mm or a 4.5mm crochet hook for most things and double ply acrylic wool or cotton/acrylic mix.
For me the finer the yarn the thinner the hook.
And above all Happy Crocheting! :)

  • To start off with, go for a chunky wool, it will make it easier for u. I'd recommend looking up tjw1963 on u tube and going through her beginners play list.
    Good luck x

Hello and welcome to crochet :D!

I started with some DK (double knit wool) and a 4mm hook. The book that really got me started was Cute and Easy Crochet which is filled with projects from beginner to advanced. It has clear instructions and the projects are gorgeous!

Oh poor you re the ripple blanket, its really tough to do what you did, but the right thing to do as you would never really be be happy with it!

I am getting on well with my Japanese Flower Scarf, I have done approx 36 flowers now.

I have a link regarding joining the flowers too:

about half way down it tells you how to go about it, hope that helps! I really would like to put some pics on but can' fathom out how to do it.......

Thank you so much for that link, it all helps for when I can't resist the yarn any longer ;)

I just found this in the help section about loading images, it may help you if you can't get Photobucket to work for you. Let me know if I can help with Photobucket, I'm no expert, but managed to get it to work for me.

How do I add an image to a post?
If you have uploaded an image as an attachment, you can click the arrow next to the 'Attachment Icon' and select it from the list. This will be inserted into your post and can be located where you want it displayed.
To include an image that is not uploaded as an attachment and is located on another website, you can do so by copying the full URL to the image, (not the page on which the image is located), and either pressing the 'Insert Image' icon or by typing before the URL and after it, ensuring that you do not have any spaces before or after the URL of the image. You can insert pictures from your albums (?) in this way too.
