Had a call from BT last night, wanted to speak to the account holder - explained husband was recovering from operation. Anyway got him talking about the prices and he offered me Broadband for £10 p.m., 24/7 calls for £4.85 and discounts on mobiles etc. , contract for a year. Asked if I used 1571, which I get by making my 1280 call divert to BT from Tiscali, so would get that free, also said I'd get caller display. Said that's useless for me as our phones are old ones and don't display anything anyway. So he said he would ring back on Thursday after I had tallked to hubbie and they would probably cancel the charges for phone rental as well!! Are they desperate to get people to return?

I recently changed to Orange for phone calls & broadband; the Home Starter deal - paying BT for line rental on the Unlimited Evening & Weekend plan.

When I signed on with Orange I specifically asked whether I'd be able to use 1280 to go via BT; the call-centre woman put me on hold & checked with someone then said I would be able to do this.

I tried it for the first time last weekend when I wanted to call a 0870 number, but, having checked my statements on-line, I see it's been put on my Orange bill - at a charge of course!

Anyone know if Orange always precludes 1280 use?

    Thanks for any help.

I think you just proved that (and that you were mis-sold the calls package by Orange).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

We make many phone calls abroad and often the numbers begin with 0844. I've spent a long time trailing through the BT website, should we return to them, to find out how much the connection charge for each call would be. Can anyone point me in the right direction please??

All chargeable calls occur a set up fee of 8p on BT from the 16/1/2009.

To avoid a set up fee.

If you now have inclusive 0845/0870 minutes consider www.my0870.com

If you have inclusive geographical minutes consider www.localphone.co.uk
  • I have just received the letter from BT about the "TWO GREAT WAYS TO SAVE MONEY ON YOUR PHONE BILL" by signing up for the free 0845 and 0870 calls.

What they are really hiding within this announcement is a 10% hike in line rental, and the fact that to get your free calls, you have to sign up to a continually renewing 12 month contract with unspecified termination penalties should you decide to switch elsewhere.

I'm with BT at the moment and am seriously considering switching elsewhere. This is not a great offer in any way, shape or form. It seems BT will never come up with a genuinely competitive offer that actually benefits their customers.

    I agree.
There seems to be a hidden catch here, for some customers at least.

The conditions on the email I have seen only refers to call packages which have 12 month rolling contracts. This means as soon as your 12 month min contract is up a new 12 month min term starts automatically.

This will make it nigh on impossible to ever leave BT in the future. i'd think very carefully before taking on this sort of contract.

Surprised Martin hasn't picked up on this hidden lock in.

They write to you a month before renewal is due. If you don't reply in the negative, renewal goes ahead.

You dont have to sign a 12 month rolling contract anyway to get inclusive calls ,existing customers have the option of paying a bit more and being free of a call contract.
