Atkins recipes for UK users

I find it quite amazing that a request for recipes can turn into an anti low carb tirade.
As I suffer from syndrome X, insulin resistance, low fat diets are bad for me. Low fat led to me putting on weight, I was type 2 diabetic with high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
The best thing I did was to do a lot of research and switch to low carb several years ago. This has led to a dramatic improvement in my health.
None of the doctors at my local practice have any problem with their patients doing low carb .
As both my parents suffered from heart disease I did a lot of research before changing my diet.
We are not machines and while low fat may suit some metabolisms it does not suit everyone.
I am not sure if I can post links to other sites, but if I am allowed to I can post a link for an excellent low carb site and also an excellent article in response to the nonsense published by the British heart foundation.0 -
sunlady i quite agree.. there are many things said on this site that i do not agree with but i do not feel the need to attack those people opinions.. especially when they have not been asked for
for the record atkins is not now nor has it ever been NO carbs.. low carb yes but not no carbs that would be all but impossible in any case... i am not going to debate it but if you really want to know more then please read the book and then come back for a debate.. if u dont want to read the book then fine dont but please dont attack us for our belief in it working... as sunlady says we are all different so please no more yelling about atkins
the OP wanted help not lectures... lets give that to her....whilst on atkins i pretty much cook exactly the same as i always have other than i have completely cut out processed foods... this means as a family we eat much more healthily.. they have potatoes i have more veg or salad,, they have rice i have green beans or cauliflower,, they have pasta i have mushrooms etc etc.. its really quite easy to adapt
i have many recipes most of which ingredients are relatively easy to find and i am happy to share them but maybe it would be better done outside the forum, please pm me if you wish to know more
thanks and good luck xxWhen you know better you do better0 -

While you are indeed allowed to post links to other sites there is a stipulation against posting Medical Advice, as stated in the link below:-

I agree with Shykins. These people that say no carbs and eat as much fat and butter as you want have not read the book.
For me if I cut right down on carbs in the day and only eat them in the evening it cuts my appetite and I loose weight, as it states in the book But it might not work for everyone.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
Well Im glad theres a couple of people on here with some sense! Thanks to those who have actually read the book and know what they are on about. Induction phase, which is the first two weeks is 20g of carbs per day. There is NEVER a point where you are told to eat no carbs. Its a matter of a careful balance, not total elimination. I can only suggest you get your eyes tested and your hearing checked if youve supposedly read otherwise or heard otherwise. If of course you get your misinformation from the gutter press then I feel sorry for you as they have told you wrong. If you actually claim to have read this in the ATKINS book then please tell me which page its on and I will explain the facts to you and help you find the truth.
Anyway-the reason I put this post out in the beginning was for RECIPESfor ATKINS FOLLOWERS to share. This was never meant to be a discussion but an MSE approach to Atkins!

Well my CONSULTANT at the hospital I attend RECOMMENDED a low carb diet for me. I followed it for 6 months (before falling preg at which point I came off it). I had regular blood tests. My cholesterol reduced, my triglycerides reduced, my blood sugar levels came down (I was prediabetic before) and a whole host of other things happened to generally make me a healthier person. I lost 4 stone. As soon as I have had this baby I cant wait to get straight back on my low carb diet.
I think people are misinformed about Atkins and low carb diets. How can eating chicken salads etc be worse for you than eating McDonalds, or pizza etc?? Because before I started on my low carb diet I also thought it was all fry ups- in fact I think in the whole 6 months I only had about 1 fry up. Low carb dosnt mean no fruit- I simply had to count the carbs in the fruits I was eating. I can honestly say I ate more fruit and veg on my low carb diet than I did before!
Anyway- menu ideas!!
For lunches: Big spanish omelette thing with loads of peppers etc, take one slice each day.
Smoked salmon (although thats not very money saving), cream cheese
Buy meats etc when they are reduced and freeze them.
Make your own puddings: I made yummy cheesecakes etc with cream cheese; no sugar jelly, etc : use your imagination!
I ate loads of pepperamis, cheese strings, make your own scotch eggs etc
Bolognaise sauce with no spaghetti
Erm cant think of anything else at the moment!
I also did my low carbing through the summer when most of our social events were BBQ'S which was great for me!!!0 -
i agree about BBQ's being great all that lovely salad.. personally i find i get very bloated and stuffed feeling if i eat carby things now
i do have a receip for instant bread which is low carb and is quite nice
100grms almond flour
20 grms ground flaxseed or bran or oats even (or mixture of)
2 eggs
2 tbspns cream
1/2 tspn baking powder
mix the above... melt 25gms butter in a tupperware bread size dish.. coat the dish then tip remaining butter into above mixture and give it a stir up... it will be approx porridge consistnecy... pour into dish and microwave for 3 mins
total carb count about 6 (depending on if u use oats or not)...makes approx 8 or 9 small slices

My father is on an Atkins diet atm, and I absently mindedly offered to go and cook him a meal next week, then remembered this diet. So what do i cook? Any ideas? Had thought of doing a roast without the spuds/gravy?"On behalf of teachers, I'd like to dedicate this award to Michael Gove and I mean dedicate in the Anglo Saxon sense which means insert roughly into the anus of." Take a look at this thread - Atkins Recipes. I'll merge this thread later to keep ideas together.
I'd be tempted to do a full roast - if he doesn't eat the vegetables, that's up to him
