I've been low carbing for the last twelve months and its not quite as strict as the original atkins diet was so feeding your father should be no problems whatsoever. The basics that you have to remember is that Low carbers dont eat starchy or sweet foods so no bread, potatoes, cakes or biscuits. You didnt say whether you were also catering for a family as well as your father so I'm going to assume you are and suggest you make something like spag bol or chilli con carne.Your father will be able to happily chomp through the bolognese sauce minus the spag bit of course and you can serve it heaped with grated cheese and he will love it or a chilli as long as you dont serve him rice with it will be fine.If you want to go down the roast dinner route well thats fine too just dont serve him any roast or boiled potatoes and he can have gravy so no problems there. But this meal is about you and your father socialising so try not to worry about the food too much the diet isnt nearly as prohibitive as people think it is

just to say u can and always have been able to have veggies on atkins - its a fallacy that u cant so yes go for a nice big roast and just leave the potatoes off for him, depending on how strict he is he may not want the gravy either

if u want a starter do pate but give him lettuce leaves for his or alternatively a prawn cocktail (make the sauce with mayo and tom puree) and if u want a pud strawberries and cream are ideal

oh and atkins isnt bad for u (waits to be flamed!)

Depends how strict your father is being, carrots are higher carb than other veggies.

Cauli cheese is great, but don't make the cheese sauce with flour. Just heat some double cream in a pan & add grated cheese & black pepper if wanted. Lush!!

I saw the title of this thread and came along to post the exact same thing!

I wish people would educate themselves fully before making assumptions made on hearsay.

I didn't want this to turn into an argumment about the pros and cons of Atkins, but I have seen the plan, and after seeing the Induction Weeks I don't need educating thank you.

I have made my opinions clear to my father, who actually agrees but has found no other way to drop weight successfully as he finds it difficult to exersise due to his weight. Whilst I can see the atttraction in some respects anyone that tells me you shouldn't eat carrots is on another planet if you ask me!

Will be swapping the Broad beans for runner's.

    Thanks all.

What hearsay? Too much animal protein leaches calcium from your bones which means you will probably end up with osteoporosis when you are older. All that calcium having to be processed through your kidneys places excessive strain on your kidneys and can damage them. Any diet which says fruit and veg are bad for you is frankly barking. Meat doesn't have any of the essential vitamins you need which you can only get from fruit and veg.
