TK-Max fake discount

I went into Staines TK-Max today and picked up some socks (well, I didn't get any for Christmas, did I?); one pair was marked down from £8 to £3.99.
I then spotted that the manufacturer's price was given on the packaging: £3.99!
So I took them along to the checkout and queried it, and a couple of the assistants were puzzled and amused, and the one called their supervisor who said that is the price they are.
I was going to query it again, but I then spotted they were damaged, so I said that I didn't want them after all.
Now I know it was only a £3.99 pair of socks, so who cares, but the point is that the shop had marked up the original price to double, in order to "reduce" them by 50%.

I have noticed this in the past. You have to have a good look at the labels.

TK Maxx had originally sold them at £8. The manufacturers recommended retail price is exactly that, recommended. Therefore the discount was not fake. Nonetheless, it does demonstrate that TK Maxx is not always (and IMO rarely) good value.
    Gone ... or have I?

Nope - the label said RRP £8, TK-Maxx price £3.99.
  • It was like a French COnnection T shirt, I had seen in FCUK stores for £20, and TK Maxx were "offering" it for £19.99!!
  • I do find that TK Max like that, the toys are dearer than those that were in Woolies and Argos , I dont like going in much anymore, I always have a reusable bag with me and I dont think the sa liked it when i said 'no' to paying for a bag.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Best advice really is to buy things that you think are reasonable value for money.

Yes, I have spotted some bargains that weren't before. But equally, I have bagged some real ones, including in the toy section.

Happens all the time I'm afraid- I shop alot at sale shops, discount sale stores, in the normal sales and sample sales. And some at regular store prices. If I see items I have seen in any of those sales in TK Maxx, then they generally cost more in TK Maxx

Jeans I have seen in TK Maxx costing £49.99 yet several YEARS ago I had seen them in a sale for £30. T-shirts, shoes....the list goes on.

With TK Maxx don't believe what you read on the label. Its all hyped up.

Oh and one more that gets me going is the trainers:
Last year JD sports and other stores were selling "Nike Free" trainers at £19.99 a pair. They had loads in (I think they even went down further in some stores).
However, TK Maxx decided to sell the very same shoe for... £29.99.

    Always shop around!
  • Although sometimes you CAN get a good deal from TK Maxx, but it's just a giant jumble sae; you need to really look around and keep your sensible head screwed on.
  • I had my eye on something for my mum in TK before Xmas - when I went in just before Xmas eve the item had been put into clearance with a red label- but the price had gone up £10!
I took it to the CS and queried whether it was mistake but was told that it wasn't - their explanation being they source products from a range of suppliers at varying prices which they reflect to us the customer (??? - seemed very strange to me and I have never seen evidence of this pricing policy before..)

All of these particular items were priced the same at 2 stores I saw them in and in the clearance they were all priced the same too.

Needless to say I didn't buy it - but having always enjoyed shopping at TK that really put me off and thought it was a sneaky trick. I won't be hurrying back.....
