next doors dogs attacking

evening all, I am looking for a bit of advice, I have a gorgeous lab puppy who is about 20 weeks old, he is becoming well trained and is setled in with us well, however my next door neighbour has 3 staffs, 3 days ago when I was walking back from our dog training class she opened the door to put some rubbish out, all 3 of her dogs came straight out and attacked my pup, who yelped like mad, I was so scared I just crouched over him to shield him, the dogs went for me , but were trying to get pup, my neighbour managed to drag the dogs in and shut her door.. I got in and was crying with anger. pup was ok thankfully ....

today i came home from work and my mum and sister were with me , i let pup i to the garden and with in seconds one of the dogs was over the fence and attacking him, we all tried to pull the dog off, pup was whimpering on the ground my sister was at the fence trying toi stop the other dog getting over.
my mum managed to grab the dog by the collar and pinned t to the ground, she called the neighbour WHO WENT IN AND SHUT HER DOOR???? my mum dragged it to her door and the woman took the dog said thanks and that was it.

my questio is what to do (I had previously had my fence heoghtened to 8ft cos the dogs were jumping over and going for us even before we got pup)

my neighbours are not nice people and are likely to cause alot of trouble if I were to call the dog warden but this is the third time her dogs have bitten me, let alone pups. I am so angry at them, has anyone dealt with anything smilar to this. ?
My aim for 2009 is to SAVE not spend. my aim for jan is to have £400 by 30th jan...... here goes! total so far. £30;)

    Hope you're both ok.....what a horrible experience!

Ok, how are the dogs getting over your fence? IMHO your main priority at the moment has to be protecting your dog.....so if the fences aren't 8ft anymore maybe you need to get some trellis up so they can't get into your garden (I know you shouldn't have to do it but....)

After that you can think about how to handle the situation so you can find a proper long term solution, to me it sounds like you need to get the authorities involved. If neither you or your pup haven't got any injuries and/or independent witnesses to the dog fight on the street you'll have a hard time getting the police involved but the dog warden should be prepared to have a word with them but you are worried about how they'll react?

The other option is to have a serious chat with them, politely if possible and warn them that you will get the authorities involved if their dogs are loose/trespassing in your garden/ out of control etc, explaining the consequences of breaking the law including being liable for your vet bills, that if their dogs were removed it is 90% certain they will be PTS as there are already more than enough staffs looking for homes.....but put it in such a way that you would hate all that to happen, being a dog lover yourself so how can we sort this? Easier said than done I know but often suprisingly effective!

You need to call the police - the dogs being able to access your garden despite you securing your fence to a higher than standard height means the onus is on HER to keep her dogs under control - that may be by a leash even in her garden. If they enter your property then the police will take it very seriously. Ideally pictures would help but at least you have 2 witnesses to the event which will help.
You can ask the police to speak to your neighbours and make sure the police know you fear retribution and therefor make clear to them that they are not to act aggressively towards you - they will probably advise you that IF they act aggressively as a result then call 999 and they will take it very seriously indeed.
As far as the attacks on you are concerned they won't count for much as as far as the police see it then it was in effect a dog on dog attack and you stepped in between and got injured - it wasn't a human aggression attack. I don't suppose you have some record of the previous incidents when you ended up heightening your fences as a result? Like did you report it to the police or local council etc?
I loathe when people get lovely dogs like staffs and then don't act like responcible owners and keep their dogs under control and properly trained. It can happen with any breed, but it does often happen with dogs that some people see as "tough" because they get them for the wrong reasons.

Stay safe and speak to the police asap!

Many Staffs don't like other Dogs & anyone responsible aquiring one (Let alone three!) should know this & make even more sure that they socialise them & know how their Dogs react. I agree with MrsTine, it just angers me because Staffs have a bad enough name as it is & us Owners should be going to extra lengths to make sure they don't give people even more reason to bad mouth them!

I hope your Pup is ok, I can only imagine how terrifying that is for you & the Pup, i'd be mortified if mine did that, but to not even care is beyond belief. Let us know how it goes & do speak to the police!
  • thanks for replies, we have spoke to council and housing before as the dog got into my lounge and went for me last summer, thats when we put up the fence, its still 8 ft high, but housing have told me to take it down as its above legal height or something stupid!!!??? it infringes the neighbours light??

I am not taaking it down.

I looked at the fence the dog has come right through it!!! I didnt realise earlir, the other dogs manage ro climb the fence well, even though its as high as we can go,

    am boarding fence tonight..

the 5 kids next door kick balls at it constnatly so it wont last long

I will ring tomorrow and se if they can speak to my neighbours, . the dogs are only behaving like they do because they have not been taught anything different, but its syill really upsetting having to live next to them all. they used to have 7 dogs but thank god had to have 4 rehomed,. thanks for replies xx

Yeah I wouldn't be taking the fence down anytime soon either! TBH it sounds like the police need to step in, to attack YOU in your home is unbelievable, I do hope they can do something, I know Dogs can't be dangerously out of control in a public place, so I hope something can be done! IMO a Dog dangerously out of control anywhere other than it's own property should be sorted! Even then it shouldn't be able to get to anyone unless they break in!

you could buy a pet corrector spray to buy yourself a bit of time. It is an aerosol that make a loud 'ppfffff' type noise and it stops dogs in their tracks. This would buy you a bit of time to get your dog away from the other dog. you can get the sprays in pet shops and they are quite cheap.

Like others have said, I would go to the dog warden and possibly the police.

I will look out for this for myself too in case another Dog approaches when i'm walking mine & the Owners can't or won't recall it, would it be ok for that? I'd rather it upset mine abit than her attack another Dog!

Did the council say anything about the fact that the neighbours are being a nuisance?

are you and the neighbour both council tenants? as if this is the case they should be doing something about these nuisance neighbours. Not only that but these dogs sound dangerous.
If they were to enter your property and get hold of a child who knows what could happen.

The neighbours are totally irresponsible and if it were me i would've complained to the council straight away.

If a dog bites its meant to reported then put down isnt it?
You cannot afford to take anymore risks. They could cause serious injury or even be fatal to either your pup or you or some other poor person.

I had a rottweiller and a german shepherd a few years ago, and would never have let them behave like that.Dog owners are responsible for the dogs training.

Both my neighbours have dogs, if one of them bit me i would go directly to the police, 3 dogs will exhibit pack mentality unless properly controlled(which they are not), how will you feel if next time they savage a baby or child?
