Cheap Parcel Delivery Thread Mk4

Hi
I hope someone can give me some advice please. We have used the same parcel service, who in turn use UPS, on a number of occasions and all has been OK.
Recently we sent a parcel which measured 132 x 78 x 20 cms. A few weeks later we got a bill saying that the parcel had been oversized and charging us £30 size excess charg and £10 admin fee. The original parcel cost us about £10 to send.
We are always very careful about measuring the packages and they said that UPS say that the actual size was 140 x 24 x 79 which would make the parcel 0.06 cubic metres over their maximum.
When we input the sizes there was no warning that the parcel was reaching the maximum parcel size.
The box was a good box which didnt bulge and was a nice regular shape so easy to measure and there is no way that we got the measurements wrong by more than a mm or two.
Can anyone please tell me what the legal situation is regarding this invoice? Do we have to pay?
We have tried to get the box back to prove the measurements but the receiver had got rid of it because a few weeks had expired.
The courier is threatening us with debt collection if we dont pay.
Another thought, the courier collected the parcel and passed it on, they didnt notice anything about it being wrong, this report has come from UPS.
Please help.

I need to send a small package < 10kg but insured to around £500. Any recommendations? Parcel2Go want silly money for the insurance, interparcel want £10 for the insurance.0

Please can someone recommend the cheapest way I can post a double bed mattress? (south wales to london) It will be folded in half and wrapped in plastic and cardboard, and will way close to 50kg. The company I am returning ot to want to charge £75 but have said I am welcome to make my own arrangements. I have tried some googling but not having any luck and as it is a return I want it sent pretty quick so haven`t got time to go through this whole thread.
Hoping someone can help. Thanks,

Is this how it was delivered to you? I would be concerned that it was delivered flat and returned folded, that the supplier would argue about the refunds because some mattresses can be damaged by folding. I would definitely get the supplier to confirm in writing that it is ok to fold it before sending.
The parcel would be best on a freight parcel service, which it would fit if folded, prices go with weight I believe that it would be in the region of £40-£50.0 -
Thanks sandiep, it was delivered rolled up and vacuum packed. They have instructed me to fold it in half for return.
I found a local haulage company advertising on ebay that they will shift items of furniture, emailed them the details and they replied very quickly quoting £42 which I think I will go with.
ETA - I went with the local company Andy Dyett and Sons from Cwmbran and got great service. Competitive pricing, two man collection/delivery and the item was on the same van door to door. No being thrown around in a depot like some of the bigger companies. Communication was excellent, they were very helpful and accomodating, can`t praise them enough. I know some of you are sending large numbers of parcels so this may not help you but for anyone in the South Wales area looking to have a large item delivered with care e.g. furniture sold on ebay, then I`d happily recommend you consider this company. I understand they will also transport motorbikes!0 -
That sounds like a good plan. Make sure that you get proof of delivery. Glad that you got it all sorted.
Kind regards

I notice eBay have imposed maximum rates for shipping now (£7 for a 48hr courier for example). They collect data apparently across all auctions to determine this which is great in some respects but I find it very hard to find a courier service to come under that restriction as I'm only sending the odd item once in a blue moon.
The best I could find was Parcel Monkey which has 1-3 day DHL at £6 (£6.90 inc VAT) but never used before, anyone here tried them?
I used to use Interparcel and they have always been top notch, my one attempt at Parcel2go was a disaster and will never go back there again.0 -
I suppose this is to push people towards using the ebay/paypal/parcelforce postage thing.0

You'd think - but just got a quote and it's £10.99 from eBay - meaning I'd have to take a hit of £3.99 on an item I already made a loss on... just doesn't make commercial sense. You'd think they would cap at their own rates!0
