My debt free diary... Unless I get scared!

  • Back onto some positive news...

OH's parents were initially going to contribute to our wedding. Having been to see a mortgage advisor and been told that we'll need a 15%deposit, even with help from my parents (they've offered £10k as they did the same for my brother and like to treat us the same :D ) we're still a fair way short of what we need if we include furniture, carpets, fees, solicitors, etc.

OH's parents thought about it for a while and then the next day they offered to pay off OH's credit card (£2,900) and put £3,000 aside to help with a deposit. They will not be helping with the wedding (which is fine, because we'd prefer it to be small - it's the marriage that counts, not the wedding)

So... if you add the parental contributions to the amount in my sig, we currently have £23,518.

OH is starting to overpay his loan, meaning it's gone by christmas, so it's all systems go for house purchase in 2010!

  • I'm not happy again today, but I can't quite put my finger on why. Debt clearance is going well (despite a blip in the middle of this month when I used my CC) and savings are coming along nicely.

Tuesday is the day of reckoning. We will each be given a letter confirming that we will be made redundant in April, or that we're 'safe'. For now at least...

  • Hi!! :hello:

I have just come across your diary and didn't want to read and run.

I am also a girly working in the construction industry and I know how hard it is getting at the moment. On top of the economy, there is the added factor (not sure thats the correct word) of being female in a male dominated environment (I'm guessing this applies to you as well?). I have really had to work hard to stamp my authority and prove I do know what I am talking about.... not only with our customers but also (although not so much) some of the staff over the years!!

I find a big grin at myself in the mirror, followed by a cheeky smile helps in the morning!! :D

I'm sure you know you can do your job and do it well, its just with the stress of not knowing abut your job, your mind is starting to play tricks. Kind of working through reasons why you might go and reason to doubt yourself!

I'll be back soon to see how you are doing - keep up the good work on the Debt-busting and saving!!!

good luck for the news on tuesday hope you have a good news envelope.

(another one who couldn't read and run) I also work in a male dominated environment and can sympathise that you do still have to prove that you not only as good but also better than your male counterparts.
  • That's just it - I don't believe I'm as good as the others.

At the weekend I toyed with the idea of handing in my notice. I tend to spend the weekend worrying about the week ahead.

  • Hiya

Look, you just have to believe that you are :) I'm sure there are plenty of good things that you do at work that you dont even realise, this is where your manager comes in. Hopefully they are competent enough to spot these things. There's nothing to say you're not as good as anybody else, and you just have to remember that. You must be good to be in the job you're in, in such a male dominated industry, I honestly believe you'll be fine. If you are in the redundancy pool, is the process of deciding who to keep by selection? And if so are your company going to be supporting those people at risk with any kinds of workshops for interview skills/confidence building etc.

Are you part of a Union?

I honestly think you'll be fine. I understand what you mean about fretting about the week ahead, it's because you get a couple of days away from work and you wonder what the point is in going back. Just remember that at the moment, unless you can secure another job straight away, handing in your notice isn't a great idea, you're getting on so well with clearing your debts and stuff, a set back like not being able to find work wont help.

I hope you're OK, I know Monday's are completely pants (i hate that word but cant swear on here lol). Good luck for tomorrow, my fingers are crossed for you

    xxx

P.S - Good job with the wedding fund, it's gone up :) When are you getting married?

  • Good news - it's a safe letter. Although, I'm not sure I want to be here anyway.

silvadebtfree - we haven't set a date yet. I am putting odds & ends into an account where they penalise you if you make a withdrawal. So the money HAS to go towards the wedding.
