Paul McKenna "I Can Make You Thin!"

Options
Living TV is showing the above show, starting tomorrow... anyone else planning to watch it and give it a go?

I read the book a couple of years back and have his CD on my ipod, but i'm actually going to take it seriously and make it work for me. Hypnotherapy has worked for me in other areas (my other half is a qualified hypnotherapist so I get plenty of free therapy!) and Paul's system is basically common sense anyway - we all know what we have to do to lose weight, we just don't always do it!

i'm also intriqued by his weight loss seminars, but think it might be a bit hard to get tickets and it's a lot of money to spend on just one day!!

i'm just so tired of yo-yo dieting... if my previous diets have proven anything, it's that i'm perfectly capable of following the rules of a diet and losing weight (for a while...), but I am not currently capable of maintaining a healthy weight because I can't stick to a diet for long enough. If anything, I am walking proof of Paul McKenna's claims that most diets just make you fatter - i started dieting when i was 18. I'm now 24 and would kill to be the weight i was when i was 18!! I got to my goal weight with Weight Watchers in October 2003... and was back to where i started by Christmas 2003 - it's been down hill from there!

I'm hoping to fix my relationship with food and lose weight slowly and safely and use the time gathering the tools i need to maintain the weight after i've lost it.

anyone care to join me?

  • I'm going to try and remember to watch it as I also have the CD from years ago but it never really seems to work. I probably don't give it long enough.

I also reached my goal weight with Weight Watchers although I can't remember what year and have put on 8 stone since then (lost 4 stone at the time). I've lost 1 stone over the last year but I'd like to lose more and quicker.

Anyway I'll see what the show is like tomorrow. Really must remember to watch it. Any idea what time it's on?

it's on at 8pm on Living. I believe it's on monday-friday at 8pm each night.

i listened to the cd a couple of times and read the book last time.. but didn't really put any real effort into following the "rules" as such, so after a while, i just gave up - like i do with every other diet!

    not this time!
  • Giving up is so easy when a "diet" isn't working. Working hard at it to make it work is a the difficult bit.

This year is the year to work hard. (New years resolution).

I spend so much time at my work that I never have time for me and what I want to do. That is changing this year and hopefully my weight will change with it (downwards).

8pm tomorrow it is. Will pop here after to say what I thought of it.

  • After yo-yo dieting for years I have finally read enough stuff that makes me believe that my problems are not to do with my weight but to do with why I overeat. (And yes I am overweight btw)
The best book I have ever read on helping yourself to break the cycle of eating as a means of avoiding your feelings. rewarding yourself etc is SHRINK YOURSELF by Roger Gould. I got it from Amazon last week.
I know that Paul McKenna has a slightly different take on making yourself slim, however I applaud the fact that he is focussing on something else other than the weight and how to diet.
I am not saying that weight is not a problem to me and others in terms of health and wellness, however I do truly believe that finding a different way to deal with my emotional health will enable my body to start to become a healthier shape.
If diets really worked long term I would have lost the weight and kept it off and so would all have you. We are overweight because we overeat for lots of emotional reasons, and if we can look at these perhaps our need to overeat for comfort etc will lessen and our weight diminish.
    Good luck to you all.
There is also a website by the book's author https://www.shrinkyourself.com
  • Thanks LT you are so right.

I had a long look at the shrink yourself site and it does look very interesting. Can't afford the online course but may get the book and see what it says.

Still looking forward to Paul McKenna and seeing what he will do.

  • I've been to Paul McKennas weight loss seminar and also some of his other stuff (NLP).
I've also got his CD 's as well.
I did lose some weight but to be honest I haven't stuck to it and still have the old eating patterns I used to have.
The technique you learn does help but you need to work at it.
Like you, I have tried everything under the Sun, but I know I eat too much and move too little - it's as simple as that for me.
Borrow the book from the library because you can learn what you need to know from that.
I went to the seminar a few years ago and think it was about £250 for the day and there were about 500 at it.
    Good luck.

Does anyone know if this is a repeat of the original series that was on Sky?

i was wondering the same thing, lolly... the original series was on quite a few years ago, i think, and Paul McKenna has updated his book since then, so I would like to think that the show would be updated and redone too... but it's more likely that they're just going to rescreen the original shows.

I didn't really watch the original series - just caught a few minutes here and there - so i probably won't notice either way!

like KittyBoo, i also know that my problem is simple - i eat too much and don't move enough - and therefore the solution is also simple - eat less and move more. it sounds silly, but it's taken me a long time to realise that it's this simple because it certainly doesn't *feel* simple every time i fail. i've learned that whilst the problem is simple, the cause isn't - i don't eat too much because i'm stupid (although my lack of exercise can be linked directly to my laziness...) and I'm hoping i can use Paul's system to beat my emotional eating problems as well as my motivation problems.

i think the main difference is that i'm determined to make it work and i'm determined to not only lose weight this time, but actually keep it off afterwards!

still... my ation plan hasn't worked out so well so far - i intended to walk home from work today, but i can't do that because i haven't gone to work - i'm still ill and in bed and feeling like poo!

My problem is that I pig out in the evenings. I will have my main meal and then if I am reading or watching TV I pig out non stop, usually crisps, biscuits if we have any in the house, the fruit out of the muesli box etc. I enjoy the feeling of putting food in my mouth. People have suggested that I knit or sew to take my mind off it but that doesn't work for me, I just crave food.

I am only one stone overweight but it is impossible to shift.

i want to lose a total of 3 stone in order to get back down to my goal weight :(

but other than that, reading your posts, lolly, it feels as if i could have written them myself! i just love food. i don't have a problem with junk food. i have a problem with food in general. i love to eat. i love the whole process of eating and could happily graze all day... so learning to recognise when i'm full is going to be an interesting challenge!

i've started my own LiveJournal to document it all. i can't imagine that anyone else will want to read it, but i think it will do me good to get things down on virtual paper and really pay attention to myself.
