I read that Adelaide in South Australia have had the whole of their central business district made wi-fi. I'm only just getting it at my house!

You read right! And this happened years ago, I was there three years ago and even back then they had free Wi-Fi in the CBD.

    Two thoughts:

    1) I DO know about security but I, and most of my mates, keep open wireless networks (with everything on them well protected) so that if MY system goes down I can use theirs to find out what is wrong over the internet and vice versa. It's been REALLy useful when say NTL has gone down but Bt hasn't to check whether the problem is the router or the network.

    2) Plausible deniability- i didn't download that sir- must be some one using my system!

In all cases we try to name the SSID to the house so that anyone using it knows who it belongs to- sometimes people want to use, but would like to ask but who do you ask if it's got the default name!
Trying to save money to err... spend it...

Wi-fi is easy to provide for nothing anyway. I reckon soon hotels and bars will start racing to provide free wi-fi (people will stay and buy drinks where they do not have to pay silly prices for wi-fi). The only issue to deal with really is abuse, and some sort of simple system needs to be implemented to prevent that.

The amount some places charge for wi-fi when all it is is a wireless router connected to a broadband connection is over the top.
