  • Claire, that's worrying - however, I am a firm believer that (especially if you have a predisposition to it) giving up smoking, regardless of method, can result in all the feelings you've reported: stress, anxiety, depression and even paranoia. In fact, I'd definitely say I was more difficult to live with and tetchy\depressed on my last quit attempt (using the inhalator). Obviously, the feelings I'm describing are a long way from anything clinical in my case (I think) and I'm no expert as I've only been on the tablets three weeks, so I will keep my eye out for changes in personality but if anything for this last week I've been more happy than I've been in a long time. The confidence it gives you when you stop smoking is amazing! I know if I can do this, I can do anything (and I'm not just trying to motivate here!)....

The first thing I'd advise anyone if they notice a big swing in their personality is go to the doctors (or call NHS direct if you're not near a doctor, but they'll probably tell you to go to the doctors) - that's what they're there for, and stop taking the medication immediately.

    Hope everyone's ok :D

  • Hi, please may I join in?

I have been reading this thread for over 3 months and am inspired by both the success stories and all the support you offer each other.

I have smoked for nearly 40 years and must give up for medical and financial reasons. There have been attempts in the past and then last summer, I tried hypnotherapy. It took 3 sessions to get me off the cigarettes but lasted only 9 weeks and I cried every day and all day for 8 of those 9 weeks! I hated myself for having that first cigarette but smiled for the first time in ages.

I have to go into hospital next month and do not want to be one of those sad folk pleading to be let outside for a cigarette. This time I am going to try patches (again) and ask for your support....hope I am not too needy! Today, is the last day of being a smoker and tomorrow morning I will put on a patch. Also have an inhalator for those moments of desperation.

Please wish me determination, will power and good luck:)

The very best of luck both with the stopping & also with the hospital stay.
  • Many thanks chollie. I have been following your progress ....and frustrations. Like you, I live in a remote area of Scotland where there are no cessation clinics. I called the NHS "smokeline" every day but they just told me to ask my GP for patches.

In case you do not have it, smokeline number is 0800 84 84 84. If you contact them they will send out pack but it is not as good as the English NHS pack.

  • Hey Oldreekie - Just want to wish you the very best of luck with stopping and the hospital visit. Regardless of method, I'm sure it has to do with how determined you are to stop, and you sound pretty determined to me!

    xx

  • Thanks, jammy dodger - the one good thing that came out of my last attempt is that the house is a smoke free zone. So, even when we had those minus 22 temps up here, I would go outside for a cigarette...total madness.
