The Giving Up Smoking Thread!! Part 2

  • Ahh, I'm in touch with the guilty stuff with smoking. I quit a couple of years ago for about 5 months and started again while I was on holiday last March (I was the "special" one who could happily smoke on holiday and then stop as soon as I got home again ... well guess what, THAT didn't pan out quite as I'd hoped....!!) My mum and dad were so over the moon that I'd quit that I just couldn't tell them I started again, and fully intended to quit again before I saw them. But the months dragged on and I was still smoking. I haven't now seen my parents for nearly a YEAR because I couldn't tell them I'd started smoking again!!!!!!!!! How unbelievably rubbish is that?!!! And I'm not some silly little teenager - I'm a 41 year old woman!

Anyway, I'm now about 6 hours away from my first 72 hours quit. So the nicotine gremlin is getting pretty frantic now and I'm very much enjoying the mental picture of drop-kicking him out of the window every time he starts growling. :rotfl: When I wake up tomorrow I know I will feel a lot calmer and the hard part will be over, because one hard lesson I've learned this year is that I can NEVER take a single puff or drag ever again. That isn't something I'll be considering trying out again.

The only part of a thread above somewhere that I can't relate to is the "hurt" of cravings. Yup, they are annoying and nagging and make you feel a bit empty, like something is missing, but I can honestly say that no part of the last three days has actually physically HURT? Did anyone else find that they were in physical pain?

Fancy going outside for a fag and to shake on our pact, Tigerlilley?

OK, maybe not! How about a clementine and a glass of water instead?

  • hi all congrats to everyone of them

had an easier day today but i know what everyone means bout the cravings at the usual times (mainly boredom)

there was one that still sticks out in my mind, whilst painting the flat i was up on the ladder and realised i hadnt had a fag for a while ( didnt realise at the time it was a couple of days) stepped down of the ladder then realised i was a non smoker or ex whichever you want to look at it then straight back up the ladder with a smile on my face and a brush in my hand

  • little lily - you're on - pact agreed - now would you like an orange juice to celebrate or would you prefer a clementine?. tigerlilley - what would you like? ooh naomim - you as well come and join the party
    Cravings, bloody cravings....

THEY WILL NOT GET THE BETTER OF ME. NOT TODAY. NOT TOMORROW. NOT EVER.
I definately agree with this - how dare they sneak up on us and try to attack! Think we ought to kick em where it hurts and show them who's boss.

playa - yeah I had that one as well - feels strange but good all at the same time - suddenly wonder how long its been since your last fag then realise you don't smoke anymore. Best feeling though when you realise its been longer than you thought.
  • I feel more positive today. Still craving-crazy but staying strong.

Had a really difficult day with completely non-smoking related hassles and in the old days I know I would have smoked myself senseless. I could have murdered a ciggie but I didn't, for one second, seriously consider having one. I just thought 'I would really like to smoke right now - but not enough to break my quit'

So I read this as my cravings are stong (again!) today but my determination is stronger. Yeah!!!!!

I also read an interesting perspective on cravings on another site: apparently, cravings like mine (ie cravings that happen several weeks after the quit rather than niotine-cravings very early into the quit) happen because we need to experience everything at least once as a non-smoker that we did as a smoker.

So, once I have experienced an event/emotion and dealt with it as a non-smoker, it's effectively crossed off the list of craving triggers.

That made a lot of sense to me. Wonder how many events/emotions are left for me to deal with?!?

Lots of love to you all, especially the new gang of fellow craving-busters :rotfl::rotfl: :rotfl:

Congratulations Graeme!! You've come so far in that 2 weeks (well, it is now!) and you've remained so very positive and thoroughly determined to crack it no matter what all the way through. Count the minutes, days, hours, weeks AND £££££££s and relax into that "I'm positive I'm going to do it" mode, but never become complacent. Brilliant news!!!

Congratulations to you too BlueIsTheColour!! Illness or not, you've still got to that awesome fortnight and to think most of us would have struggled like mad to have at least some cigs in that time!!! Well done indeed and get completely well soon! A great motivational 2nd paragraph!

Many congratulations on that WHOLE month MoonRose77!!! A wonderful amount of time to have reached and, like graeme & Blue I do so hope you're feeling so much pride with having come so far! You 3 have done amazing whilst so many folk, that didn't take the plunge, are still out there wishing. I so hope it'll happen for the too soon.

Hi Naomi, Keep strong through them and, with Champix, they will soon pass. Some of it will be in your head remember - but some will also be because you know when you OH is outside having a cig as I expect you're almost feeling every puff. Go on upstairs and brush your teeth or pelt up and down the stairs, you'll soon wear it off. Are you still having glasses of water, OJ's, clementines and general fruit etc? They will all help too, give it all a try.

Try not to worry too much about the feelings of guilt, if we all speak the truth no doubt we all have some because of family and friends. I wish with all my heart that I'd never had to hear the words "Mummy PLEASE give it up" from my youngsters! Sadly we can't turn back the hands of time, we must push forward and make all our loved ones proud of us NOW and make time count for so much in our far more healthy futures!!! Keep strong Naomi - please for your sake and his!

Oh dear Tigerlilley, let's hope you got through the rest of the day ok, and I reckon you will have. Though it doesn't surprise me that you've had cravings as it's still so early for you, but no doubt tomorrow will be so much better and if the next is the same as you've just had, know you survived today and you CAN do so again!!! For those worst ones change your routine around, you'll find that's a great advantage and cut out coffee.tea or anything remotely connected in 'your past'! Please have plenty of glasses of water, fresh OJ's, as well as clementines and general fruit and veg etc? They will all help too, give it all a try!

Another oh dear skintandscared!! Still, you seem to have answered your post yourself which shows you're thinking rationally - very well done for that!! I think most of us can relate to "thinking we'll be able to smoke the occasional 1 or 2" only to regret it so much so quickly. Please keep up the water, orange juice, clementines and exercise as all of them as well as all fresh fruit will help you so very much. Try not to worry about the parents dilemma, where quitting's concerned it makes little difference whether you're a teeny bopper or your 40's, just think about how proud YOU will be the next time you see them and they see you're not smoking! IF they should ever ask or suspect then I suggest you're up front about your 'shame' as they'll appreciate your honesty - 14 or 41!!

To answer your question; I never had any physical pain through quitting and the way you're viewing it in that final paragraph is spot on! Keep up that resolve SandS and stay strong!

So very well done Playa1406! I could visibly see that smile when you realised and went straight back up the ladder. Keep the boredom times filled with things to replace them. You're doing well already!

Congratulations on such an amount of time passed and you still coping little Lilly Very well done with your

<<"Tell you what, Tigerlilley, Naomim and MoonRose - I WON'T CRACK IF YOU DON'T!!!!!;)">>

Though not so sure about the <<"Fancy going outside for a fag and to shake on our pact, Tigerlilley?>>"

Good job I know you're only larking about and truth told, really made me giggle!;)

A good idea below from MoonRose77

<<"Little lily - you're on - pact agreed - now would you like an orange juice to celebrate or would you prefer a clementine?. Tigerlilley - what would you like? Ooh naomim - you as well come and join the party">>

Keep it up girls as all thought that aren't about ******* are thoughts in it's place and another part of it's butt kicked each time!!!

Just seen your latest post Little lily, you're sound SO much more positive and looking for the good in it all. One major thing I did not long after I'd quit (and certainly tested me) was to move, now I certainly don't wish that on any of you but I got there so I can see what the person writing your quote meant LL. You'll all get there too, but if you have a trauma ir mini crisis, even a little one, that's when you'll know "I'VE QUIT!!!!" :j:j:j:j:j:j:j

    Hi guys,

Didn't get back on pc yesterday. TigerLilley, LittleLily & Moonrose, you're ON :j:rotfl:

Still having the cravings but as I think Skintandscared said, they don't physically ache, ok maybe just a bit:confused: like I'm hungry:confused::o

I have noticed when I get in the car in the mornings to drop DS off and get to work that it's not stinking as much although DH still smoking in there when he uses it but that is occasional. We are hoping to get another car later this year so my non smoking money can help pay for it and I can keep it all fresh with nice smellies :j

One of the good things for me is a close friend I work with has also stopped smoking at the beginning of Jan, she is using the Allen Carr method (for about the millionth time :rotfl:) so we are messaging each other on the pc's all day encouraging each other.:T

Keep it up everyone, we are all doing well.
