  • Hi all
Just wanted to thank puzzled for that totally inspiring post. Like a slap round the face with a wet fish !

Self esteem big issue here. Those on the outside wouldn't think so, but from where I'm sitting it's all just an act.

    I'm still trying.

I think you are definitely "worth it" DC! Absolutely, and most categorically worth it.

Just keep posting and you will get there. :)

  • Hi All,

Im currently a 20 a day smoker. Ive decided to stop smoking, ive tried 4 times in the past & longest ive managed is 3 months using patches. I went to see the Quit Smoking Nurse at the doctors and was prescibed Champix.

Ive been taking it for 4 days & today Ive decided to stop using it. The side-effects ive experienced have been just awful & typing this I feel pretty upset. Ive had the sick feeling that seems pretty common, but ive also had awful mood swings, depression (for no reason), anxiety, feeling agressive & last night I had a panic attack. Im really at my wits end now & feel im never going to escape the curse of smoking. Has anyone ever had a similar experience on Champix? Is it worth carrying on taking it & hope the side-effect pass? It deffo does work, the first day of taking it I only smoked 5 cigs & that was a half at a time.

I dont know where to go from here & am stressing out alot, althou im not sure if thats another side-effect of Champix.

I never took Champix but had the other one Zyban. I don't have any advice regarding whether you should stop taking it, but I do want to give you hope that you are will be able to quit the nicotine.

I would say google the Champix but very often you end up hearing such horror stories about all the various drugs that no-one would ever take anything.

Is it possible that the thought of stopping could also be making you feel this way? I know what you mean about the sick feeling as I think lots of medication can have this effect.

Anyway I just wanted to reply as you sounded very upset. Go back and see your doctor and maybe you could try Zyban. I had no problem with them - even though I ended up smoking again but that was my fault not because the tablets failed.
    Good luck. :)

Hi everyone! Well PC seems to be alright now after an overhaul with AV and Spybot, so here goes. :o

funk, a warm welcome aboard and congratulations on quitting that awful habit, very well done!!!:T So sorry to hear of how you're feeling, it must be awful. A lot of others have expressed the same side-effects while others get on fine with it, so I agree with larmy16 about going back to your Dr and relating your feelings to him/her and see what he/she thinks best. Whatever happens though, don't quit the quitting! You've already made a great start...keep it up and continue on, staying strong all the while!

A great post you put on Puzzled, a great way to view the need to quit the fags too! As well as DC and others SE's affected me a great deal throughout life. I think part of me was born that way and other health problems since have affected it all too. I honestly don't think smoking helped me though and have felt no benefits since quitting all that time ago. That's just me though and everyone has their own views and feelings about it, and as always, what affects one doesn't always affect another. Well done for getting through the week!
Don't anyone ever worry about pouring hearts out on here, I think it helps us all when we express our feelings so very much, and those tears certainly helped you!:)

imfedup why not sit the kiddies down with OH and (even though he knows all the reasons) tell them all what you're going through, why you're giving up the fags and how all their love and support will help you tremendously - but - meanwhile; you're so sorry if they feel you've hurt them, you certainly don't mean to, but it's all the affects giving up smoking entails. Then give lots of hugs and kisses, they'll love you for the explanations. ALSO....how about changing your eating at the mo by replacing whatever it is you're eating with veg and fruit or maybe a few nuts and dried sultanas. You CAN still get back to the weight you'd started being happy with IF you curb the eating. So often it's giving in and having those snacky foods that can make us crave (physically or psychologically) the fags even more so you end up with an "itch, scratch, itch" syndrome. Cut out the snacking and replace with fresh, nutritious snacks (fruit etc). At the same time, get as much exercise as you can, you'll feel the benefits of all so very quickly!

Hi DC, amazing how well we're hidden behind these monitors eh?:o I'd never be spouting off in the real world as I do on here. ....Now some might say that's not a bad thing.......! Never give up the trying DC, just try and be spurred on by the feelings of others on here then.....one day!!!!:D

Great news Claire, the time will soon pass and you'll be on that sensational journey of a lifetime! :j Don't worry....we shan't forget you in between whiles and will welcome you back with open arms!;) I would have put a pic of a group hug on at this point, but it always looks so very perverse  so I'll stick to a grin. :D

Everyone is doing so very well, with each of you so determined that no matter what comes up in life that you WON'T cave in...(where's the point, it won't help ) I can only admire you all and wish you all the inner strength you need to get to that winning line. :j ALL the best everyone and enjoy Sunday. :D

  • Ok here's my problem. Bearing in mind I stopped using AC with extreme ease in 2006. Started again with the same ease 4 months later, under the influence of alcohol.

It's the fear. I know if I don't have any cigarettes in the house I can't smoke and I'll just feel uncomfortable for short periods when the little monster starts nudging me. But my subconcious kicks into panic mode, 'what are you going to do, no nicotine...OMG !' So I give in, buy a pack of ten and leave them untouched for a few hours. And..... give in.
Then it starts all over again a day later when I have one or two left, must go and buy more ..

I'm going round and round in circles here.

Hi everyone. DC - I just wanted to say that I so know how you feel. I've been seriously trying to stop for the last 2 months - in fact, I've stopped and started, stopped and started again more or less every day for at least the last month, and now I think I've gone quite mad . I don't want to give up and just accept that I'm going to carry on smoking, but I don't feel determined enough to accept the work that needs to be put into stopping.

I'm sorry, I don't know what the answer is - just wanted to say that you're not alone.

Towards the end of my smoking "career" I was down to clinging on to the hope I could just smoke on a Friday (my weakest day) and then stop for the week. How crazy is that?

I would buy a packet of tobacco. Have a few rollies (after looking forward to them all week) - my mouth would be salivating on the way home from work. After the first few puffs I would think how disgusting it was and then feel despair that I would never be free of this ghastly chemical.

Tobacco would be run under the tap and into the bin it would go. Sometimes, next day I would be craving so badly I would go and buy some more and go through the same rigmarole again! Some weekends I would spend about £15 on tobacco and it would all go in the bin. Madness.

This, my last attempt has been the easiest ever. I really don't know if you just come to the end of the road and give up fighting it or you just get a surge of determination.

The alternatives. Keep smoking and feeling bad about yourself or quit and go through a few days of body and mind deprivation. The mind is the tough one. Maybe finally believing that we really are in control of our mind is the key!

All I can say is don't stop trying. There is no alternative. When I hear they are trying to ban smoking outdoors too I am so relieved that it no longer affects me. I hated smoking outside - so unrelaxing. Even the most hardened smokers are now having their fix outside. I can smell it drifting in my back door if it is open. Boy does that smell carry. Unbelievable.

Good luck to you all. :)

  • I started again last night. Lambs Navy Rum and the wrong (smokers) company and yes you guessed it..... I caved. What a wimp.

My mouth tastes vile and I have the headache from hell. Haven't been even remotely tipsy for over a year and now I remember why. I have 4 left and I know I will smoke them cos they are here.

OK so tomorrow I can start that awful three days again..... right after I go and give myself a good beating.... anyone got a big stick?!

Sorry guys... I will get there.

For those of you stuggling... don't give in giving up, the hit lasts about 5 seconds and then you just feel awful about yourself and smell vile and everything tastes nasty again.

    Keep on quitting.

Katch I am praying you don't do this to yourself one more time. Yep, just get back on the horse. It's the only way. Don't beat yourself up or with a stick! You are only human.

I had a thought earlier when I mentioned about the amount of people (me included) who no longer want to stink our houses out with smoke. Well what about our lungs eh?

Surely they are infinitely more precious than the curtains or whatever smelling?

Nicotine certainly gives us twisted logic!

    Keep going Katch.
