The Giving Up Smoking Thread!! Part 2
Comments
-
Hi everyone,
I have been reading this thread for the past couple of weeks just wishing I was one of you that are already over the worst bit..... you are all doing so well.
I desperately need to stop smoking for several reasons:
Recently recovered from breast cancer (yep, you would think that would do it)
My partner does not smoke, never complains but I know its not fair
Cancer makes you poor and we are struggling with debt after my business more or less failed and my ex got half of my critial illness money.
Currently have a chest infection and feel dreadful.
I became a seriously dedicated smoker when I lost my daughter Nov 26 2003, my Jo hated it when I smoked 'Mum, youre not as nice to hug when you smell' was a regular from her. At 18 she was super fit and nagged me to quit all the time.
So I have decided, if I can find the strength to still suck air in and out when one of my children are not longer huggable I might as well make it clean air. The awful marriage is behind me and I have every reason to quit.
So I have appointment today for my bloods etc at the docs and I am going to tell them I am quitting tomorrow (I never smoke more than 10 a day).
Wish me luck, I hope I'm posting soon with some tips for others
Keep on quitting everyone.... it helps us new ex smokers to look ahead
x
Hi Katch22, my sincere condolences, i cant imagine what you have been through and i hope every day brings a little more sunshine.
Im new to this thread so i hope im not treading on anyones toes.
When i finally quit smoking using Allen Carr's book i told everybody i knew that i was quitting smoking so i could not go back on my word.
The book says dont avoid smokers or situations were you used to smoke, enjoy been smoke free and pity smokers, because when you look at them and yearn for a cigarette they are looking at you with envy wishing they had your power.
Stay strong0 -

I am nearly at the end of the day and 2 chocolate bars, half a pizza, potato wedges and fishermans pie later i have almost eaten all of my reserve junk, but have not had a cigarette - that has to be a sign.
Keep reisiting the cigs peeps
Hey, you have done so well!
Day 1, first day of the rest o your life.
Day 1 is probably the worst, you have done so well  do something nice for yourself, and give yourself such a big pat on the back :A0 -
Very well done indeed Puzzled! I'm so pleased that, for the time it was needed, you allowed some extra food to become your crutch. Far less harmful and easily remedied. All best wishes for each new day, time really does help, be patient and kind to yourself.
karmacookie, you're very welcome. We all try to help each other as best we're able and if relating our stories can help, then so be it. I've forgiven your OH btw, he sounds so supportive and proud of you, and after all what can anyone say if it was you that led him astray!!! With luck though, he'll quite probably take your lead and quit too in time, I hope so. Please beware of the demon drink though as all too often folk take it up again without even knowing it - until the next day!!
BTW all new members, the person to thank for this thread is it's original starter of the 1st thread. Jo1972. It's her you need to thank as she started the first one to help herself quit and to try to get others to join her. It happened in a HUGE way, and as you now see we've come a long, long way with soooo many now being no-smokers!!! Thanks a bunch Jo!!! :T
BTW kaisersoze re your post to Katch22 "Im new to this thread so i hope im not treading on anyones toes." We don't do worrying about treading on the toes of others, so, no matter how new you are to the thread..... if you can help another quitter, then please, go right ahead and do so, that's what we're all here for, to help each other!:T Thank you!
Have a good day everyone and for those of you who have come a long way, stay strong and keep up the great work. For those who are new or fairly new to quitting, please stick with it and focus on beautiful things during any hard times. Take plenty of exercise, breathe deeply and keep on praising yourselves, you really do deserve it!!! :T Thinking of you all.

Thanks for all your lovely messages. Some had me in tears, people are so very kind. I love reading others experiences it really does help knowing that this can be done in spite of the challenge and its well worth it.
As I have replied to Sue I know my life sounds like a soap opera but hey I wouldn't change places with anyone (other than my Jo). I have so many friends and the best family ever, so it's time for me to lift some of their worry and STOP SMOKING.
So far today I have cleaned the kitchen and been for a walk. I have 900g of the very posh jelly beans and I intend to savour each one as and when I need them. I already have a terrible cough and my doc has said that should I struggle with it whilst I stop he can give me something to help ease it (not sure if that might entail a gag or a hood of some type) but it doesn't seem any worse yet..... who am I kidding I have been stopped half a day I don't suppose much has changed yet.
Anyway I am officially and ex smoker today and trying to stay upbeat. I can do this. Thank you again for all your lovely messages and for everyone that posts so I can nose in and believe that I can be like you all.
Keep on quitting all xxxxxDFW Nerd No 1218 :T0 -

You sound so positive Katch, Just keep thinking positive and you will be fineIt sounds as if you have worked hard to overcome a lot of obsticles and now smoking is one of those things that you have already started to beat.
There are some wonderful people on this thread and there is so much support there is more than enough to go around.
Well done for being quit so far today, the first 3 days are the worst, that is when the nicotene monsters are going mental in your brain. I hope that the jelly beans help (and if they dont then you can always post them to me)
Have you gone cold turkey completely? Do you have a friend or family member you can text or call if you hit a weak moment? If not then come here and post on the board, it definately helped me to do this at the start, sometimes just by sayting how much you want a cigarette you can start to work through the craving by talking about it.
Good Luck and well done

Hi katch and congratulations on what I believe has by now been your first full day!!!:T An hour, a week may not sound much to the "non smoker in progress" but to those of us who have already got further, we know just how hard that first day, first week etc was and the courage involved in you getting there!! I hope by now, you've been so proud of what you've achieved so hour by hour, day by day, keep being so very proud of all you've done, it'll give you such a boost! Remain as upbeat as you possibly can, it'll help no end. Things such as cleaning the kitchen and going for a walk are great things to do as not only are you taking your mind from quitting, but you're getting a buzz too, and with the walking you're getting good exercise and expanding your lungs to let the old rubbish out and inhale fresh air in!.
A few days off of those 'orrible sticks and you'll already find a difference in your chest. You have a wonderful family, friends too, so lean on them if you need to, talk to them if they're good listeners, people love to feel helpful so give them the chance. Also, come on here anytime and get things off your chest, it really helps. You're so right with your sentence above, you CAN do this, really you CAN!!! One day into your journey katch....you've made an amazing start! Well done!!!
Hi Puzzled, great ideas there and all will help you katch! I hope today might have been a tiny bit easier for you Puzzled, though I honestly do know that it takes a good long while to accept such things. Be kind to yourself, you deserve to with all you've achieved recently, and you've done yourself really PROUD to stay free from all the harm of cigs. Keep it up Puzzled and keep feeling that pride!!! :T
Hiya feedum! It's always so good to see you back, and having stayed quit for a whole 18 months is totally amazing and so very much to be so proud of!!! :T I can remember when you started out, and to see you here notching up those months is absolutely incredible!! :jYou're such inspiration to all those going through the process and people like you coming back and telling your stories of how you quit and how you feel now does so much good and let's folk know that they really CAN do it too!!! Congratulations on quitting and on getting the weight off feedum, you're a true inspiration!!!
Keep it up everyone, and at any weak moments go for a good walk or punch your frustration out on a pillow, far better than the alternative. Best wishes on another new day!

Morning all.
Struggling a bit this morning... having eaten almost my own body weight in jelly beans yesterday I have prepared some healthy stuff for today. I feel a bit cross that I keep on thinking about it. I have spent a lot of this morning talking out loud to myself about how stupid I am being.... could I be the first person that goes nuts stopping? Nah.... that happened ages ago. I'm ok. I have a smoking friend coming later I plan to sit as close to her as poss and brag :-)
Thanks for your support Sue and everyone else. Just reading this thread really helps. I'm off to put some loud music on and dance with the hoover.
Have a great smoke free day all xxDFW Nerd No 1218 :T0 -
Hi all,
Katch, you sound so positive. Keep up the good work. It's strange how life affirming stuff doesn't just do it for us, until we are ready. I have a friend whose 50years plus smoking father has recently had a stroke. She being a person who loathes smoking (and has only just realised that she doesn't need to loathe smokers as well - a smoker isn't a bad person just cos they smoke), is happily reporting that he will have quit for sure because it will be 3 weeks when he comes out of hospital and he surely won't want one after that.
I have warned her it aint that easy and back in his familiar habitat all the triggers will be there.
Don't worry about the jelly bean habit, that will pass. I had a rancid cough for nearly a month and that too passed.0 -

Hi Katch
You shouldnt berate yourself for thinking about smoking all the time, that is going to happen and you will turn it into an obsession. When you think about cigarettes instead of worrying about it think "YES I AM A NON SMOKER" enjoy the fact that cigarettes no longer have a hold on you, soon you will realise you havent thought about smoking for ages.
Also remember the "need" or the "craving" only lasts for a few minutes even tho it doesnt seem like it.0
