You just struck a chord there puzzled. About self worth.
I have felt better in more ways than the health stuff since stopping smoking. I have a more positive outlook generally and things are starting to move in the right direct and although I'm not going to blame smoking entirely for it, smoking was definitely a symptom. Now that is gone the other stuff is slowly falling into place as my self esteem gets better.
All these things are interconnected and maybe it was just my time to kick the smoking habit to touch but I do feel things have started falling into place following that.
Yay, glad my random babbling makes sense to someone else and you are describing the same things as me, i have other things that need to be delt with but i am having a life appraisal and am using my motivation to my benefit.
Well done on starting the DIY stuff, busy hands make less mischief as my nanna says

I do think that smoking and self esteem are very closely linked - well to me it was. As a teenager that used to get bullied at school for my hair, clothes, glasses and weight I wanted a way out of it, my SE was at an all time low as the more I was told I was fat/ugly/poor etc the more I felt I was. I needed a way out, so I started smoking this meant going behind the bike sheds at break and dinner with all the other smokers. This meant I was "one of them now" and although it didnt stop the bullying over night it certainly gained me a "few friends" my self esteem gradually started to increase as time went on as the majority of the ones that bullied me gave me tips on how to look etc.
Unfortuantely, my SE has never been great due to the bullying, it lay dormant for a while but never went away. I then went from one violent relationship to another which in turn made my low SE return but the one friend that got me through it all was my cigarettes. At times when i was low a cigarette would help me through.
Thankfully though I met my OH is THE most loving, caring boyfriend I have ever known and I am going to spend the rest of my life together with him. He has seen my low self esteem but has helped me through it. It is rearing its ugly head again now that I have given up smoking but I wont let it beat me just like I wont give up on giving up. I will tackle my problems one day at a time.
As the house is spotless now, think I will turn my hand to baking - oh dear looks like the weight is going to pile on - but hey I can give up smoking I can do anything I put my mind to :T0 -
Just remember that smoking doesn't and never did make things better. It doesn't reduce stress, it doesn't relax you, it doesn't cure boredom. It does nothing for us. It is not your friend. What you got through, you got through despite smoking hun.0

Oh and puzzled. It's not going to be DIY for me. Everything will be done by paid professional.
I have loads of money remember - cos I don't smoke any more. :T0 -

Still trying to quit here
Just keep posting Davey. At some point you will just have to s*it or get off the pot and then you will be among friends who will encourage you on and understand just what you are going through.
It is wonderful to not have the problem of smoking in my life. What I love about this last attempt is that I no longer have that feeling of I am trying to stop - I really feel that I have stopped and there is no temptation whatsoever. How liberating that feels. I truly believe it was posting on this thread that got me to this point.
All you new quitters, just keep going for one day at a time in the beginning. As time passes you will find you think about it less and less until the day comes when you barely register it except when you see someone else smoking.
I used to chew on a biro and inhale the smell of coffee in a jar - for some reason that really helped me!
