The Giving Up Smoking Thread!! Part 2

Larmy, that is exactly the same as me, I used smoking as a weight loss tool as ever since my late teens I have substituted ciggies for food. The meds I am on now increase my appetite and slow down my metabolism so I have put loads on regardless so I decided if smoking wasn't keeping me thin what was the point to it.
Best of luck with the weight loss, it is a struggle isn't it but then again, i we can get rid of the cigarettes then we can achieve anything (plus exercise will be a lot easier as we won't be out of breath and wheezing after 2 minutes).Smoke Free since 03/08/20090 -
A warm welcome to the non-smoking world Lynette! Good for you in making such a tough decision and for all the right reasons. Yes, you'll have times when you think it's not at all easy, but those are the times to turn your mind to something totally different, something lovely. Bring beautiful memories to the forefront of your mind and recall all that made them so special. I've sent you a PM, I hope it helps. Focus on all the ideas, they really do make sense. Exercise is another great distraction, go and do some, even if it's only up and downstairs a few times! You'll feel much better afterwards and it'll save putting on extra weight! Being 49, short of breath and sick of chest infections should be the time to make you really want to make the most of this chance you have and succeed as you still have time to turn your health around and feel like a new woman!! Keep an aye on the Champix and if you've doubts about it upsetting you, then go back to the Nurse/Dr or Pharmacist and let them know. You may need something different, or be though it enough to try going cold turkey even! The journey you've started out on is the best journey you'll ever make and when you get to the end, you'll be ecstatic...in fact all along the way you will be! It does indeed definately get better, wait for the change in the smell of your clothes, hair etc - and when you pass smokers who will absolutely STINK!!!
You're more than welcome gizmo. Well done on that first mammoth task of reaching you 1st week free from the evils of fags!!!:T We've all had the little weak moments, it's how you cope with them that counts, and you will.! Take a look at your little ones and know you're doing it for them as much as you. Little things like that can help so very much. I was so thrilled you got through your temptation at the shop, and all you told yourself and all the feelings you had are the ones you should stick to at such times. You're really doing so very well so be so very proud of yourself and move onto the next day of your healthy journey!
Well done larmy, you're really keeping at it and doing amazingly well.:T Take great pride in all you've achieved as you really should be so very proud of yourself. That first 1lb of weight shifted too, it's brilliant larmy, now build on it (or should that be 'off') and you'll soon be feeling so good all round! That wasn't intended pun by the way!!! I have the same slow metabolism problem with underactive thyroid and need to keep an eye on my weight or......!
Thanks so much for your inputs ady and warehouse, it's good to have and so is the support to all those quitting! Thank you.
All the very best everyone. It's all so worth it, so please keep it up and get free from all that smoking entails. Don't let it rule your lives any more!

Well done to all of you for keeping it upall of the advice that you give is so comforting Sue, thank you

Well done on the weigth loss Larmy - it really sounds like you are in control of your life, well done
Well done lynetteeveryone here will be keeping you company and you can come back and post even if you have a slip up - trust me, ive been there and done that last year - this time im looking at things a little differently but everyone in this thread is so supportive its amazing
gizmo, well done! looking at your sig its over the week mark for you now - its all down hill from here hun - you have done so well to get over this really hard part, now that the nicotine is out of your system its the habit you need to focus on rather than the addiction
I agree Sue, you need to do whatever works, some people find that NRT really works and if it does thats amazing! i have to say, ive never considered it, but then everyone is different, i know that champix has helped so many people.
In a way i think that this thread is my NRT, when i want a cig or when i think about smoking i always come and have a read (even times like now when im supposed to be working lol) and then read the bits of advice that are offered and then translate them to my life.
Wow, im waffling rofl: sorry, gonna get back to work now.
Stay strong guys and gals, we can beat it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!0 -

Aww thanks Puzzledbubbles this helps as I actually feel the complete opposite today!
I feel so fat and gruesome, anyone else get those days and yet I have cut down so much on eating (sweets, chocolate etc.) - just feeling a bit down today I guess.
Still not smoking tho! And that is a very good thing.Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

Hiya Puzzled! Don't worry about waffling, it's allowed on here as chatting helps free our minds from other things. It's so good to know you're still staying free and being determined to get your good health back. How long have you been free from that wretched curse now? I agree with you re the NRT, I couldn't have either, but each to their own and if it gets them to where they need to be, so be it! If this thread acts as your NRT though, keep it up on a daily dose! The best prescription there is!:D Are you still putting your money in your pot on the other board?? Stay free Puzzled, you're doing SO well!!!:Tlarmy16 wrote:I feel so fat and gruesome, anyone else get those days and yet I have cut down so much on eating (sweets, chocolate etc.) - just feeling a bit down today I guess.

You are so right with that last sentence larmy, hang onto it as it's vital!
Don't worry too much about feeling "so fat and gruesome". I think it happens to us all, men included, as so much depends on the foods we've eaten on a particular day to start with. Keep a food diary larmy and see what foods are affecting you, then change each food accordingly and see how you go. Another thing to give us the same feelings (especially for me at times) is the lack of exercise. Start that food diary and see how things appear. You could, if possible, step up the exercise too.
All the best as weight loss is never that easy, but like the fags, it's achievable given time. Be kind with yourself.

Hi guys, sorry I haven't been on here for an age - nothing more sinister than as smoking doesn't occupy my thoughts I just forget to pop in so much.
Well I'm just approaching the 5 month mark and still a very happy non smoker who is ever aware of never succumbing to 'just a drag'. As long as I keep that in mind and remember that there is nothing to miss, I will continue to be fine!
Good luck to those of you who are new to this and well done to the others who are continuing to be smoke free.
I've been having a quick look on dating sites and I would say 90% of the people on there would not consider going on a date with a smoker. So there's even more reason why it's good to be free of it - your chances of getting together with a special someone are greatly enhanced if you don't have filthy habits (now to work on the others).0 -
There is a man I constantly see in a supermarket car park, who stands outside his car and smokes one cigarette after the other. He draws on the cig at regular intervals as if his life depends on it.
If he is a secret smoker, then who is he kidding? Himself? He must reek of ciggies.
Another sad sight is people who have to stand away from others at the bus stop to stop the effects of their cigarette annoying others.
Saddest sight is the young school kids who congregate at the back of my house to have their cigarettes before going in to school.Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

It is sad but I can't look down on them. I was recently on holiday and only one of our group was a smoker, even though we ate outdoors he would still move to another, empty, table to have his ciggie after the meal. This wasn't helped by one woman - and ex smoker herself, doing all the waving of the hands gesture in front of her face. It didn't bother anyone else and we were outdoors after all but for her the poor guy even being at another table wasn't enough. I really don't like patronising ex smokers and I've told people to slap me if I ever become one.0

Absolutely agreed - I could never look down on a smoker - how hypocritical I would be. It makes me angry that smokers are so villified but there are so much worse things that people do to other people.
I meant sad as in how terrible a hold nicotine wields over us.Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

I could not agree more with that sentence larmy. Let's face it after having been addicted to those blasted things for so many years, we know exactly what lies ahead of them and how all too soon their young lives could be in peril - all due to fags! Then they go through all the coughing, chest infections, fear etc until they think "oh, I'd love to give it up, but just can't", then - all being well, they'll come to boards like this and get help! Yet they have all the information necessary to stay clear of them, very, very sad indeed.
Well done SandC!! :T Sounds to me as though you've cracked it and reached the end of your journey. You've remained utterly determined all the way through and seem hell-bent on never touching one again. Many congratulations, you've achieved so very much, well done! I felt so sorry for that poor smoker and the woman being more offensive than his smoke! That is so very cruel and never fair whether you're an ex-smoker or someone who has never touched one. Nothing gave her the right to be so judgemental and she certainly had no idea of what his everyday life is like. A case of 'there but for the grace of God go I', for sure.
So, you've the male part of that 90% to take your pick from now, what a wonderful task, if you need a hand.......!!If I remember rightly, don't you go on another holiday in September or maybe I'm mistaking it with the one you've just had.
IF you've another still to go on, have a wonderful time, if you've already been I hope you had a wonderful time! Hedging my bets a bit d'you reckon!
Keep going strong larmy, you're doing so brilliantly! All the very best to all you others determined to be like SandC, you WILL get there if you stay strong and always find something else to keep focused on! Exercise works wonders so does fresh fruit and carrots to nibble on.
