Evening all. First post here. I need to ask a couple of questions; firstly, does anybody take Citalopram or know anybody that takes it? My wife has been prescribed it by our GP for depression. However she is an alcoholic (GP knows) who has been into rehab for 6 weeks about 18 months ago and recently packed in the booze for 7 weeks again..with the help of Citalopram and also Chlordiazepoxide. Hooray, life was good!!...for a while...but she's recently started drinking on the sly again, unfortunately. It's causing real problems in respect of issues of trust etc, but my problem now is that my wife appears to be drunk some of the time (usually in the evenings) and i really can't be sure if she's actually had a drink or two behind my back or whether its the drug. Unfortunately she has a track record of lying to me about the booze, hence the trust issues. I really want to believe that her apparent drunkeness is caused by the drug but find it difficult to believe. Has anybody had any experience of this?
Thanks.0 -
Citalopram does not make you drunk with its effects in my experience it makes you a bit more clear headed in some ways

Hi Oz264
I was prescribed Citalopram a few years go when I was having a very very stressful time which involved some very nasty incidents including threats to my family, damage to our property, harrassment etc etc and a court case [which we won]
Because of the stress of the situation, my moderate drinking became pretty heavy and I drank every evening even though I was on the medication.
During the day though I didn't drink, & I was in complete control whilst on the drug. It had no effects on me that could be misconstrued as my having been drinking.
Having said that, everyone reacts to drugs differently - that was just me personally.
It may be that your wife is reacting differently to me,and some people do get side effects in the early weeks of the medication.
This may help - the first poster reports 'feeling drunk' on the drug, but for me it was fine. Just depends on the person I guesshttp://www.uncommonforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=19738

I personally hate to doubt anyone, we do have some posters who admit to being alcoholics. Perhaps they could advise on that more? But I just wondered do you drink? My heart goes out to you when you said that for: "a while life was good". So I hope things will improve for you, and please keep posting to get the support that you need at this difficult time. Take care and look after yourself. xxxxx

Hi everyone,
Life back to normal and have been AF since Sunday so feeling loads better - have been in the alcohol fug of hangovers and light depression for the past few weeks through drinking almost every night when out.
All my own fault of course - nobody forced me to drink, it was just an odd and unusual time and I'm so glad to have my routine back so I can focus on the challenge again.
8 AF days now so finally starting to make some progress towards target.

Hi All
Sorry I've been so quiet lately - been reading but not getting around to posting. However, been doing quite well and seem to have knocked the week day drinking on the head, which is fantastic for me. I really didn't even think about it on Monday, which is really amazing for me !
NTC - my up-to-date figures are now 12 AFD's
Welcome to the newbies - will try to post more tomorrow.0 -
who has been into rehab for 6 weeks about 18 months ago
I use a weekly AA meeting to remind me of where I have been.
Sheila Hancock said on TV recently that she used Al-Anon to help with her situation. In her 2004 autobiography, The Two of Us: My Life with John Thaw, Hancock, who also starred alongside him in an episode of Kavanagh QC, revealed the extent of Thaw's alcoholism that had started in the late 1970s and caused problems in their marriage and the gaps in Thaw's career in the early 1980s and later 1990s. Thaw was eventually able to get his alcoholism under control a year before his death.Living Sober.

AF8 for me please, ntc.
Mostly OK tonight. The hardest evenings are when I'm at home doing nothing in particular. I'm fine when I'm busy but sometimes I just need to relax and for me relaxing means glass of wine in hand! It's so hard to break that habit.
I'm back on that naughty bench tomorrow for a long weekend. I think I'll stretch out on it and sun myself while there's some space!0 -
I didn't drink last night at the restaurant which I am pleased about. I'm now up to 4, please NTC. That means I'm a quarter of the way through to my target.0
