er! its hard to explain in words -

when you do a knit stitch, you are pushing the point of the needle away from you and then wrapping the wool around the back of the needle and over it and then slide the needle under and on top of the other needle, then pull the stitch off the needle underneath onto the other needle.

After you have done two knit stitches, then bring the wool onto the side of the knitting closest to you inbetween the two needles, then push the needle with the two stitches on it from front to back towards you through the stitch, then loop the wool in a u-shape around the needle with just the two stitches on it, then push this needle down and away from you to put it behind the other needle and then slide the stitch off the other needle to give you three stitches on the first needle.

I have tried explain it as best I can, I did it step by step on my own knitting whilst typing it on here to try make it easy to understand.

Sorry if I have just made it worse. :o

No that makes perfect sense and I have a sneaking suspicion that I've been really, really stupid! Thank you so much for your help, hat number 2 will be lovely! I'll pop back when I've finished to let you know the result (or, more likely, I'll be back in 5 minutes having accidently suspended myself from the ceiling with wool or something!)

EDIT: thanks to you too maytaurus, it's all making much more sense now! Thank you very much for your help, both of you :)

Just popping back in to let you know I finished the hat, hooray! It actually worked out fine and my friend's very chuffed with it (or very, very polite!)

I should really stop knitting while I've got exams to revise for but will be back when I start my next project! Thanks for all of your help :)
