I would really like some help please? I find it really difficult to pick up the right amount of stitches for borders and collars on cardigans etc? How do you do it? Because I can't do it, I have just knitted the border separately and then sewn it on which is ok but it's not the same and I want to master this bit of knitting badly! Please help!

Hello everybody, hope you don't mind me barging in here :)

I recently posted asking for help with a knitting pattern and was pointed in your direction, I hope somebody can help. I'm currently knitting a hat, following this pattern...

    1. Cast on 72 stitches.
    2. Work in knit 2, purl 2 ribbing for 8 inches.
    3. Next row, *knit 2, purl 2 together. Repeat from * across.
    4. Work next 3 rows in Stockinette Stitch.
    5. Next row, *knit 2 together. Repeat form * across.
    6. Bind off, leaving a long tail when you cut yarn.
    7. Weave end through the bound off edge, pulling tightly to close up the hole in the top of the hat. Sew the side seam from top to bottom and weave in any remaining ends.

I've just finished step 2. and I'm stuck! I've been doing knit 2 rows, purl 2 rows but am suddenly worried the pattern meant knit 2 stitches, not rows! Can somebody please explain step 3. as if talking to a toddler?! I'm slowly realising I'm not great at knitting..!

    Thanks for any help :o

Hello, the bad news is that it does mean stitches and not rows am afraid. But don't worry.

Step 3 - knit 2 stitches, then put the point of your needle through the next two stitches and purl them together as though they were one stitch.

Don't worry, you will get there, it is always trial and error, its how you learn.

Hope that helps a little, if not am sure there are some real experts on here who can explain better than me.

Keep going and best of luck with it all. :D

Thank you for the quick reply!

I don't understand how to purl and knit in the same row? It all gets tangled up!

Good thing this present is for a friend who's such a nice guy, he'll wear it no matter how awful it looks!
